Mary D's

With the new area being built and the North stand expansion, we really do need more places to drink in the area.

A purpose built square or something resembling nevizade Street would be ideal.
Nevizade St could never be replicated.

Some of the best City supporting nights of my life and I've been going since 1958.

Phenomenal.

Agree did 4 nights there each one absolutely brilliant ,more than made up for the shite stadium and would go again in a heartbeat

I hope it’s going to reopen as a pub. We’re severely lacking in any drinking establishments near the ground.

Not even just for city fans. It would probably good for locals in the areas, there’s f all near the etihad.
Mary D’s, The Townley, The Corner Shop, The Bradford and The Grove spring to mind.

Nevizade: I’m vegetarian now but this was my first of two nights in Istanbul whilst on my way to Azerbaijan watching Wales.

I was staying on Taksim Square and just randomly found Nevizade looking for pubs likely showing football. Delighted to hear it hosted so many Blues for the final.

Those door touts were hilarious. They’d say anything to get you in to their bar.

Yes I'm sure it's all going to happen soon
So you can all wreck your livers

I stopped going in Mary D's about 7 seasons ago because the dickhead DJ kept getting Munich chants going. And the saddest thing was blokes in their 50s singing them with their lads.
That was going on there in the early days in 2003, at least the I've got dog his name is rover and all the verses and Munich chorus.

One of the first DJs was sacked off cus of it after a few years, he was telling me at Blackburn away in 2009 the 2-2 game.

Does anyone know whether Mary Ds was ever compulsory bought? There was some chatter about it a few years back and the houses near it are starting to be demolished.

A major pub chain did attempt to buy it, with a view to demolish and rebuild as a purpose built pub, concentrating on the match going crowd, and also food for non match days. But the council said no to it.

Ditto their plans to do a new build near to the ASDA many moons ago. (A second major operator was also knocked back doing similar too)

It seems the council/police/club (??) are happy to see less pubs rather than more, as one reason given back than was 'keeping the drinking in a concentrated area', ie within the stadium.

If you're coming from the City centre to the ground, take a detour through Northern Quater, and Ancoats, plenty of places to have a drink, you could do a new one every game if you wanted.

I went in Mary-d's once, they'd have to pay me to go back, used the Townley for a while, but far better places elsewhere.

I mostly don't bother with any these days though, I guess it depends what you want.

Yeah, but they’re all either in town or very close to it.

Not sure what the average number of annual events are at the ground, including concerts etc? Maybe around 30? Probably not enough if you’re getting virtually no business at any other time.

But once the Arena opens, a well ran boozer on the walking route to town could be an absolute gold mine I’d have thought.

Can't say it bothers me, and Ancoats is not far short of half way from Picadilly, have a drink (eat cheaper than the stadium), and walk it off.

I only became aware of the "new" Ancoats last year, for most of my life it wasn't somewhere to go, now it is, especially in warmer weather.

First time I ever went what's now Mary D's was was proper messed up experience in the late 80s that I have no memory of, not only because I got drunk at a wedding but I was also actually aged only 2 or 3 years old on the day.

How did that happen are you asking? I was a little unsupervised scruff discovered drinking leftover unfinished bits from pints, the tables must've been covered with cloth I presume and I'd been nicking near empty pints off tables, copying around me by drinking those bits underneath the tables. Not sure how much I had or if it was started by a wrongun there who thought it'd be a laugh giving me some as sick joke, I've reliably been informed though that I was completely pissed that day supposedly even had an hangover the next day.

So if anyone went to a wedding there and saw a drunk 2 or 3 year old in the late 80s, maybe it was me but then again who knows maybe I'm in the majority here who went there young.
