New Champions League format

So greed and all the rest to one side...

As a fan, there's already too much football. I can watch football from around the world almost every day of the week, and there's games I don't watch as my girlfriend isn't going to tolerate me sticking any more on outside of City stuff. I can watch City twice a week, the premier league 3 or 4 times a weekend + my SC. I don't keep up with TV shows I'd like to see or other sports I enjoy, and football already encroaches into other hobbies or social events or leisure. It's just football as content.
Must admit I have stopped watching much outside of city apart from sneaking in the Girona games (although La Liga is generally poor). Not worth the grief and a lot of the quality is poor. Even watching the Arsenal or Liverpool games hoping for an opposition win gets tiresome when they always seem to get to play until they score a winner. Not interested in any of the European games outside of City.

In terms of CL formats the current version (7) is the second worse after 6, but they got worse after the first 3 each time.

I don't mind playing more teams just not more games. It is a knock out cup with the luck of the draw, it isn't supposed to be equal for every team, and it never has been.

Agreed 100% It was 2014 when I realised I was losing my life to football. As well as home matches, I had multiple platforms to watch global matches, & found there's always a game being screened somewhere on the planet.

One time when the family went down south to visit the in-laws, I took the week off work to get some DIY done & enjoy a bit of peace & quiet in the house.

I hardly shifted my arse off the settee for the week, through watching or recording every match possible. It's from then I decided to keep it City only, & 10 years later I've mostly stuck to it.

I get the domestic timetable & the CL, but all these international breaks & other pointless competitions is just UEFA & FIFA trying to rinse as much money as possible out of the game, & damn the players' health.

I respect the players saying they're playing too much, but this is in their hands. If they withdrew from Internationals & all the other daft comps like the Nations' League, World Club Cup etc, & left them to the EDS, Championsip & Football League players, you'd see how quickly UEFA & FIFA sat up & took notice.

They need our stars, more than our stars need to get rinsed. Affirmative action is the only way we can stop this fuckin madness.

We've had Tom Lockyer, Christian Eriksen & our own Marc Vivien Foé literally die on the pitch, not to mention Aguero's near miss. These players are the clubs' assets, & as such they should protect them accordingly.

I recall David Bentley being persecuted for dropping out of the England squad after saying he was too tired. If players don't take care of themselves, they can't rely on the football authorities to do the job for them.

Enough is enough!

Money money money
The bundesleague and especially la liga are sick to the back teeth of the premier league coining it in and want a piece of the pie.
What better way than to suggest the super league with the top English teams in it.
And make no mistake it won’t matter how shit the rags are or the dippers become with the following they have they’ll always be in it.
I think if this goes thru international football will die as most players are already faking injury to swerve England games
If this shit happens I’m out 100%
Oh and it’s a big tough shit to the players aswell

Very unlikely they ditch it now. They arent just going to ditch those extra promised spots midway through the season and more games means more money for them which is all they care about.

I personally hate the current format, I think it's boring as fuck until the quarter finals as it's far too weighted for all the heavyweights to avoid each other until then, however, It's somehow less shit than the new proposed format.

Have to hand it to uefa, managing to come up with something even worse is no easy feat.

Agree
How can it be a fair competition when you do not play against the same teams as everyone else in the league stage of it
I'm not a big fan of the format, but is it any less fair than the current situation where some groups are much harder than others? And ultimately, won't the same teams end up going through?

The knockout draws are also supposed to take into account where you finish, which is marginally fairer than a random draw, but then that "randomness" is surely a great part of what people like about knockout tournaments, so is total fairness a legit aim?

I would prefer the luck of the draw situation it use to be.

Wish it was true, as the new format looks terrible, but extremely sceptical that the plans will be shelved.

Already signed the tv contracts with all the extra games included I would imagine.

I read the Vox Populi article this tweet is based on and it’s about UEFA changing the revenue distribution format to give the teams more money, not the new group format.

Unless I’ve missed something or the translation is REALLY bad, I think this is a case of one twitter aggregator getting it wrong and everyone else just mindlessly copying them without reading the article.

There would be plenty of space in the calendar if international friendlies were scrapped and the volume of qualifiers drastically reduced to the levels they used to be at. We have four international breaks and no winter break. This is madness. International football was much stronger 50 years ago when there were less games. The standard of international football has plummeted while club football has improved at the highest level.
There are more qualifying games because there are more countries, particularly in Europe following the break up of the Soviet Union and the Yugoslav Federation.

As would we all but that is never going to happen. The greed of the old G14, and the greed of UEFA once they realised how much they could make, ensured there would be no early exits for the "elite" clubs. Even the nonsense qualifiers get six games - for the benefit of lurking raggies.

It is much wider than that. UEFA expanded the system hugely. It is crazy not to seed it properly to avoid crazy fixtures against Gibraltar etc. international football has been ruined by greed.

So it's not home and away against the same team? So you can play harder games away also than other teams!
