I'm shocked...

Might watch the debate tonight, only to see if there's any intelligent life in Grimsby.
Was there a couple of weeks ago. Nice town hall. Rest of the town very dispiriting. Reckon the Spoons near to the train station takes over £100k pw.

It’s huge and always has folk in there spending.

I’m not going to be hearing out the Greens until they change tack on nuclear power (which they still haven’t in this year’s manifesto). Any realistic transition away from fossil fuels, if we want to meet our climate targets, needs nuclear. Denying this reality is to live in a world of fantasy. Nuclear power is the cleanest, safest and most reliable method of power generation currently available - it produces less CO2 than solar. Any climate scientist will tell you this.

The broader point is - combating climate change is supposed to be the Green’s flagship policy platform. It’s what they are all about. So if they insist on torpedoing their credibility on this issue and not listening to scientists then what faith can I have in their credibility on any other issue?

Don’t get me wrong, some of their policies seem like nice ideas, but it’s impossible to know with them which of their ideas are actually thought through, evidence-based and realistic and which are built on impractical dogma like their stance on nuclear.

Some people on 100k may be struggling but you cannot base tax policy on individuals or some people.

50k is decent wage and should be taxed accordingly. Personally I think we need huge Tax reforms in this country. Its another chance for Labour to make meaningful change. They won't take it though.
I think the issue is that people on 50k are already taxed appropriately. Its people such as myself who put chunks of money into their pension to avoid higher rates of tax and those who only pay CGT because a large part of their remuneration is in share options.

But it needs to be fair and be the same for everyone, the idea which was mooted prior to the election of exempting hospital consultants is wrong.

Whilst its an option to avoid tax people will do it.

Dividends should also attract a higher tax rate.

Finally and I will say it again, when payments are taken from private pensions they should be subject to tax and NI. Obviously the state pension should always remain outside of tax.

Fully agree, for baseload generation its the only sensible option, even though its expensive to build and maintain. Ruling out nuclear to satisfy the more extreme party members is just idiotic.

Just thought I would add something as a private renter.
I'm 60 now, and I have some savings. I have worked continuously since I was 16. Even when I had my son I was only absent from work for about 6 months

I now work 2 days a week, and supplement that wage with my occupational pension.
.
Life is OK, and I'm better off than many. I do know that.. I can go on the odd holiday without any worry.

But I know I'm slowing down with arthritis, and the lift in this building keeps breaking down.

So I have to walk up 8 flights of stairs every day now, with heavy shopping etc.

Thing is, I can't get social housing because I have a bit of savings.

It's just that I don't see any help at all for people like me
