Newcastle United (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

I saw and heard all this overconfidence right before we lost to them in the cup final 3 or 4 months ago - people shouldn't have such short memories. Ive seen it in derbies before they beat us with solksjaer. Saw it before we lost 3-2 at home when we should have won the league at the etihad. Find it bizarre after watching how flimsy we were today that, after all that, people think it's still laughable they won't beat us again

My point isn't about united, it's about how flimsy we looked without rodri, and how in any game against decent opposition when the heat is turned up if we play like that we'll probably lose

We need people to step up. Haaland did. Gvardiol possibly did. Jack did ok but we need more. Ruben shirked it. Kovacic was shaky, borderline panicking. Walker is our captain apparently but hes an absolute fucking car crash. Bernie barely noticeable at times and a horror show from gundogan. Newcastle are bang out of form but we couldn't control that game today. I can't believe anyone would fancy us at anfield, arsenal or united if we play like that?

Thankfully it's early days and this happens almost every season with us, so stay calm and see how it pans out
You could say we are actually outperforming what we are normally doing at this stage of the season.

On a side note, did Ederson completely forget he was on a yellow when he decided to stop the game for what felt like an eternity? It felt like he was pushing it as far as he could to get a booking but forgot he was already booked.
It would have been really ironic if Eddie had got a second yellow for time wasting after Arsenal keepers time wasting master class last Sunday.

Did not deserve anymore than the point.
Thought Walker was very good.
And a very dodgy penalty given the thumbs up by the VAR official a certain Mr Atwell ffs

Has he had a poor start, really. Apart from the corner against Arsenal, where he shouldn't have been the one to mark Gabriel, what has he done wrong?

He was slow getting back into position against Arsenal, not entirely his fault but that resulted in the equaliser.

The penalty is on Walker today, if he isn’t a yard behind our back 4 Gordon was offside

Or if Akanji hadn't let Gordon get goal side, or if our midfield had done better to stop the situation arising etc.

The transfer policy in the last 2-3 years have been really strange.

The inability to find Rodri replacement or someone who can help Rodri for a club while splurging cash on Nunes and Kalvin.

Our squad is severely depleted and it’s Pep’s genius that was keeping us afloat with consistent titles.
There would be a season where this would really bite us. Maybe it’s this season. Maybe Pep does another wonder and we win a title again.
But Pep’s non chalance towards few of our new signings makes me think they were all txiki signings.
Our squad is at our worst in the Pep era. While Arsenal and Liverpool have increased their depth year on year.

This is the most level playing field in the last 7 years. We may even be a little weaker than Arsenal and Liverpool.

Let’s see if we can pull out another title from the hat with Pep’s genius in the absence of Rodri and the fast decline of KDB.

With Rodri injured - the only players in their prime in our squad are Maybe Haaland Grealish Foden

Bobb Doku Savio still young!

Got what we deserved today, Pep set up to control the game which we did for the most part but we always seem to shit the bed when the opposition scores, like rabbits in headlights for 10 mins or so. I’d have played Bernie in the central with Kovacic more in the second half and brought Savinho on earlier. Pep has an eye on Tuesday as well no doubt. Foden needs to start games and play the KDB role, which just have no creativity in the middle, Gundogan seems to be having a nightmare start he’s just not upto speed at the moment but he will come good. Haaland never had a sniff today but again that’s more to do with the way we set up in the first 60 mins or so, he saw more after the wingers changed.

We win this game and future games when:

1) Foden starts in the middle, stop playing him wide, he needed to start with kdb out

2) On that point, we went with TOO many controllers, gundogan, bernie and grealish lack the cutting edge, or isnt enough of it.

3) Savinho RW, stop with Bernie RW, play him in the middle.

4) Dont play Walker and Lewis, would much prefer Walker taking more of a back seat this season and let Lewis flourish as the inverted RB.

with the best will in the world gundo could barely control the ball today never mind a game, we would have been miles better off putting bernie in at ten and savinho out wide

I don't think either team was shite. I don't think either team was particularly good. We were bang average. Newcastle were bang average. Pretty fair result. A late goal from us would have been a deep dig and Bernardo placing his shot slightly differently would have been one of the moments of the season but pffft. Early days the season has barely started. A point away to Newcastle is not bad result at all.
Bits n bobs.

Yeah, but it's United

Ederson
Rico Akanji Dias Gvardiol'
Silva Kova Foden
Savio Haaland Grealish

that? depending on stones fitness then him for Akanji i reckon and KDB in later.

Think we need to prepare ourselves for a lot of teams shithousing their way through games, they’ll have been watching the last two games and realise the refs gonna do fuckall about it and it might just pay off
We have to find a way to score more early on to prevent this tactic against us.
Also we need to be a lot quicker with the ball and stop letting teams get back and regroup while we pass it around

Obviously made up your mind then.

Or if Akanji hadn't let Gordon get goal side, or if our midfield had done better to stop the situation arising etc.

I think Walker’s pace bails us out of lots of trouble, allows us to pen teams into their own half but it’s hugely frustrating that he’s making so many mistakes leading to goals.

He’s a senior member of the squad and obviously well respected by his team mates so it’s not as though as he’s a young guy learning. He just needs to be sharper. I expect more from him
