Running thread

Late entry to the Valencia half this weekend. Two years running, the same lad at work has pulled out and given me his bib. Not trained specifically for that distance but at least I've been a bit more consistent with my running this year. Not paid so no pressure and I'm just going to enjoy it. I'll be delighted with 1h45.
Have a great race mate, I'm there myself for the full hit in a few weeks, Valencia looks ace

First parkrun back in about 12 months, think I dipped just under 23mins, no injury reoccurrence.

It's the first week I've had where every run has been fine, no pain. Might be able to start more specific training to get back to PB shape
Great news mate

1h45 would have been great but I'm marking this one down as a bad run and moving on! Finished in 1:49:39 (5:12/km). Just didn't have the energy and my head went after getting there late and piss wet through. I'd moan about the weather conditions but that didn't stop the winner breaking the world record (57:30!!!).

Need to find some speed from somewhere. I've been running regularly this year but I know deep down that I haven't pushed myself enough. What used to be a steady 4:50 pace has turned into 5:15 and I feel like I'm stuck in a rut. Definitely need to include more threshold runs, hill stuff and track workouts. I'll concentrate on that for the rest of the year.

I always do my runs and swims in the morning as it's the only time of day I feel I have any energy. I'm definitely a "morning person".
By midday I start yawning, and I always need a "power nap" in the afternoon.
I always aim for 7 to 8 hours sleep, but I don't have to keep any energy back for work as I took early retirement over 3 years ago.
Sounds like u got your routine perfectly dialled in!

it's great that you can listen to your body without worrying about work demands. That power nap sounds like the perfect recharge too... early retirement perks! hehe

as said iv tried it, and work productivity dips massively esp after lunch. so props to u. keep going!!!!

Still a decent enough time mate, but I hear you when you say you could have done better.
I'm the same with the rut malarkey, passed 4000km for the year today but don't feel as though it's speeding me up any, think the speed comes from the sessions, on/off, track, fartleks etc. but I'm just happy smashing out the miles and can't be arsed with the sessions if I'm honest.
I see loads just doing a session or two a week and getting big results, it's definitely the way forward if you want to get quicker

Question how do u feel during the day at work? tired? or full of energy? I tried it, and boy by lunch im yawning. By 3pm im KOD. How many hours of sleep do u get in prior?
I run every morning before work, I find that if you can keep active then the body just adapts and you don't get tired, I started a new job 18months ago where I'm not as active as before and it does tire you out, but I find doing something (another run!) at dinner knocks the tiredness out of you

I've not posted in this thread for ages! Really enjoying my running at the minute.

This month I smashed my half-marathon PB in Manchester (1:38) and then got a free bib to the Yorkshire Marathon a week later, which I did in around 4:15 (I took it easy as I hadn't trained properly).

Through a friend of a friend I've been signed up to do some pacing in December which I'm looking forward to also.

I'm on 1,600km for 2024 and hoping to reach 2k by the end of the year. Lost over a stone.

Anyone who's on the fence about running, get out there - best lifestyle choice I've ever made.

Keep pushing for the 2000km mate, it's a decent target and belting for motivation.
Where are you pacing?

Good afternoon gents. I hope you're all getting on well with this running caper.

Trying to get back into it after a few bad months. My youngest daughter was discovered to have a brain tumour and is now on a programme of chemotherapy after spending quite a lot of time in hospital in Newcastle. At the same time as all of that, I've been under hideous work stress.

This has all meant that I've been boozing, eating appallingly and doing no exercise. It feels like this is the right time to pick up the good habits again. I've signed up for the 2025 Great North Run to raise some funds for one of the charities that my daughter benefits from, so I'm hopeful that this will motivate me to get ready to race.

I've managed a couple of 5/6 milers in the last few days, so that's a start. I'm not thinking about marathons at the moment, which means I can focus on speed rather than distance. We will see how it goes.

No better time to get back in the saddle and start smashing the miles out mate, it can be a struggle at the best of times to get the ball rolling, but with all you have going on no wonder your not feeling energised and ready to go.
Speaking from experience I would say knock the booze on the head for a bit and focus on the fitness side, it does help a lot once you get a streak going, I had a load of shite going on last year and just cracked on through knocked the beer on the head and focussed on getting fitter, a lot of the shite that was getting to me is still there but it doesn't affect anywhere near as much now.
Also if your doing the GNR for charity get the link posted on here I'm sure there will be a few that will chuck in

First event is Tatton Park 5k... It's organised by RunThrough. Apparently every race I pace for them they give me some credit (think they said £35) towards other races!

Seems like a pretty good deal to me.

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter Stuuuuuu. I hope she's reacting well to the chemotherapy.

Focus on her and the things that matter most. I've learnt that lesson over the last year and a half and work is right at the bottom of that list these days. As Gaz says, knock the booze on the head and get out runnning. That's my escape and it really helps when things are getting on top of me.

It's great that you've already signed up for a race and will be using it to fundraise as well. Please share the link when you have it.

Hey!

That's so shit and I'm sorry to hear it. I hope your daughter responds well to the treatment.

I know it's not always easy, but you shouldn't be stressing about work too. Make sure they know whats going on. Get signed off for a few weeks if you need to get your head straight.

As others have mentioned, booze and stress don't mix! Running is a much better form of therapy.

Please post the link here. I'll donate.

Just to echo what others have said. Really sorry to hear about your daughter and I hope her treatment goes well.

I hope you manage to cut down the boozing & bad diet and increase the exercise and eating better.

Getting out for a run or doing some other form of exercise really helps my mental state when I'm stressed or going through hard times.

You doing something positive like registering for the GNR will hopefully help a bit.
