Spurs (A) | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

Never sensed the desire to win that game, Pep didn’t seem arsed either.

Positive was that we used 6 academy lads in a game and for periods we were more than competitive.

Injuries a serious issue now.

Nearly 70% possession away to Spurs and largely because every squad player and youngster understands the system. By contrast, Spurs look devoid of any recognisable system, and their stiffs/youngsters look like individuals. Really like Postecoglu, yet that result is papering over substantial cracks, and I can’t help think tonight’s victory will be Pyrrhic.
Spurs will win fuck all. Again.

I went to the game with that stupid feeling of being excited to see another game and knowledge we would lose it because Pep was saying it whoever wanted to listen and it was this haunted ground for us.
Two observations from the game. Right now we have a lot of players highly capable to schlepp the ball around in all different patterns, we are the best in the world, just to be totally ineffective once they hit the box.
And all the goals we are conceding this season is totally on Pep and his weird set up. I don't blame Rico or CBs at all, you need to be in the grounds to see our positional game to realise why we are so weak. Rico is not inverting at all, he just plays proper 8 when we are attacking, our left and right CB as some sort of wing backs good 80 yards from our own goal and It is only surprising we didn't concede even more with this tactical approach. It is like expecting a platoon of soldiers to defend the country size of Luxembourg. It is going to be fun season to watch, he is not relenting and he got himself ultra small squad will all these injuries and Foden retiring, exactly what he likes.
Saying all this, Nunes started showing his quality.

Not too upset that we lost. More worrying is the injury situation & the fact that 2 of our most creative players, Foden & Gundo, continue to offer very little at the moment. If they were both playing well I’d be more relaxed.
McAtee - didn’t realise he was still playing in the 2nd half.
O’Reilly had a poor 1st half but came on strong 2nd half.
Wright just looks like a player
Simpson-Puesey looked good, has the build of a strong central defender.
As for the post match comments about being hungover for the FA Cup Final…club should reimburse every City fan who attended.

We now have clear weeks freed up from time to time. That should allow players to recover properly, and it will be linked to the high incidence of injuries (I mean playing two games a week for months on end) and a diminishment of that.
Even in the last fifteen minutes, I'll be honest, I felt very divided about the way I wanted the result to go.

Even better, they are discounting the goalie (why they do that, God only knows).

So we have 10 outfield players and a sub, more than enough.

More than we had when losing the '55 Cup Final because we were down to 10 men, effectually after 17 minutes due to injury and no subs allowed then.
I'm sure Eddie could play outfield at a push. So not all that bad really.

Bournemouth game is huge now.

Win that, chuck the sporting game - we got plenty of games left to qualify.

Play the kids against Brighton then get a fortnight's rest and recovery.

All the big players should be fit for the next game after the international break. Then we turn the screw!!!!

Injuries obviously the biggest worry from last night, but second on the list is they way we conceded the first goal.

Basically the same as at Wolves - they work the ball to our left flank and put in a low cross behind our defence to their left winger who is pretty much free.

Maybe it's just a lucky coincidence, or maybe teams have noticed a weakness in our setup.

Chuck the Sporting game? Yeah, we only have PSG and Juventus to play.

Really surprised how people have a different perspective on the game. I honestly thought the 2 academy lads that started were awful tonight. O'Reilly especially. I really want him to be good enough based off pre season but he was terrible. That said most of them were tonight.

The 2 that came on did well but I'm confident none of the 4 will be playing for us in 2 years, although I still hope I'm wrong about O'Reilly.

The team was plenty strong enough tonight but they didn't turn up. Those saying we gave it a good go.... Really? Spurs had more and better chances. After we scored I thought we'd take the game to them, but no. Never mind though. Saves a few pennies which can go towards Munich
It's a very high bar to make it at City currently.

Realistically you are looking at 1 player making it every few years.
