As I thought, Sec of Def Boris Pistorius said on stage in Munich today Europe w/o US would need several years to be capable defending Europe on their own.
I would add: in theory!
Europe isn't prepared for that at all and we all can expect debates galore before anything happens. Recruitment of the young European generation? Have fun.

He’s right if it were attacked by a major foe with vast military capabilities.
Russia currently is neither. It has demonstrated its strategic incompetence and lack of professional military personnel and hardware.
Today, a European Alliance force would finish them off.

MUNICH: SHADOWS OF 1938, SHADES OF THE WEIRED, TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED
I hardly know where to begin. What an immensely stressful day. On the one hand we have 47 seeking to believe and end to the war will usher in a wholesale nuclear disarmament follow up. On the other we have Veep Vance telling us that it’s us, here in Europe who are loosing our values and free speech inside and outside of the EU, because we’re liberal.
It was a direct attack on those principles and yet in a twisted way seemed to imply it was the Orbans and Le Pen’s of this world who would keep us free.
It’s like he’s from a planet where authoritarian libertarians run things and a world where you can say what you like as long as it’s what we want to hear.
The Europeans and Ukrainians made it perfectly clear that there isn’t going to be a deal on peace if it doesn’t work for Ukraine. On the other hand Vance was busy again saying the US could go as far as sending combat forces into Ukraine if Putin doesn’t play ball. Nobody believes that but you have to wonder. He was assertive about more sanctions - and seemed serious. The phrase ‘nothing is off the table’ became sound bite of the day. It doesn’t matter what they say you can hardly believe any of it.
At the same time 47 is back in Washington answering questions at a press conference where he fudged an answer into an unintelligible word salad. It was deliberate. What he tried not to say was the US will still supply weapons because he doesn’t want his MAGAnuts to realise it. When asked why he said ‘because if we stopped then Putin wins’.
We have to remember that Ukraine is still dependent of the US for more than weapons - it’s ‘NTM’s’ - National Technical Means, ie spy satellites SIGINT, and Starlink.
And if that wasn’t enough the Chinese foreign minister made it clear they would work with America and the west but if America tries to stop China by ‘boxing us in’ especially in Taiwan, they would react accordingly.
The new 47 administration is in a mess trying to trip over itself worshipping 47 saying what he wants to hear rather than what needs to be said. In the end everyone is no closer to understanding what they really mean because it’s so inconsistent. And Secretary Rubio hasn’t even said anything yet. Add to that Ambassador Kellog isn’t in the negotiating team …but the Middle East envoy is.
It has been a bizarre first day. I’ve never seen anything like it in 20 years of going.
Oh and just too top it off it’s only 47 and Putin in Saudi Arabia. Ukraine seems not to be attending. Trump wants the visuals all on him- he sniffs a Nobel Peace Prize coming his way.
This is what Putin wants - a deal with America - but there won’t be a deal without Ukraine and Europe. This is 2025 not 1938.

i think Europe will pull itself together 'eventually' Ukraine really has nothing to negotiate with Putin except he gets the Fuck out of Ukraine, dont forget the horror stories that were reported in the early stages of this war, killing children and eledrly people, Mass graves, cutting off the private parts of captured soldiers, Putin is nothing more that a wanted war criminal who hopfully find his rightfull place on the end of a rope
