Russian invasion of Ukraine

If you need to know anything about Putin, just look how he treats his own people. He chooses to rule by fear/brutality, not kindness. Any reason to defend him on here, should end there.

Putin's excuse to invade based on the threat of the Ukraine joining NATO is blatantly false. Both the US and Germany completely dismissed the idea. It was a complete none starter and Putin knew this. Putin's biggest fear was other satellite nations wanting to do the same. (Including EU aspirations)
The Ukraine voted to oust the previous government. Putin didn't like this.
If the Ukraine had a Russian facing government (like previously), then he wouldn't have invaded. But it was the Ukraine choice how to proceed for their own future, not Putin's.

The other reason given for invading Crimea and the mainland was about protecting Russian speaking people.
If those people in anyway felt threatened, they could have moved to Russia. You don't invade a country to protect people. You accept them as refuges.

If you think any differently, you have fell for Putin's propaganda or don't think clearly.

Zelensky: “I will not sign anything that ten generations of Ukrainians will have to pay for.”

Ukraine will not be shackled by debt, by backroom deals, or by compromises made under duress. We are fighting for freedom, not to be sold off piece by piece. No leader, no government has the right to sign away the future of an entire nation. Ukraine stands for its people—not as collateral for someone else’s agenda.

Slava Ukraini.

Dictator! ;)
A hero of our times.

Ukraine obviously went against the notion of free speech that the likes of Russia and some in the US want to hear, becoming dictators because they refused to bow down to authoritarian regimes.

That’s the thing with despots, they will try and crush any form of uprising, by any means possible. Including the use of X.

Please just explain why? Why didn't Russia invade Europe 20 years ago? Why now? It makes zero sense. I understand the rogue state scenario but Russia is not a rogue state, it was a fully functional state in the world until 11 years ago. We might disagree with Russia in terms of democracy and other things but there are hundreds of countries like that.

With Ukraine however it does make sense because Ukraine for a start in some places is basically bloody Russian, many speak Russian and many people in Ukraine essentially identify as Russian. The reason why is they were all in the same boat until the USSR fell in the early 90s! They rejected that only in 2014 which caused Putin to invade via arming separatists.

For Ukraine to join the EU and the Americans in hating Russia that would move influence away from Russia and consequentially obviously that's always going to be a direct threat to Russia.... Explaining why Russia invaded Ukraine seriously isn't rocket science whereas explaining why Russia would somehow invade western Europe is a mystery to me.
There, quite literally, are not hundreds of countries in the world, never mind hundreds like Russia!

I wonder what else you got wrong?

Whilst I agree with every word, objectively I wonder whether it would have been better to wait until after Macron and Starmer visit this week to be so definitive, although I’m not holding out any particular hope for those visits, but they’ve got to at least try.

He’s absolutely correct in what he said though, and I guess he had little choice but to say it in the afterglow of election victory.

3 years ago today Russia attacked Ukraine.
3 years in which the west did just enough to stop Russia winning but not enough to allow Ukraine to push the Russians out.
Shameful in many ways.
