Either way he needs to be moved on, i suspect he wont go if he loses the level of money he's on

He would have to have a huge desire to play football because nobody is going to pay him what we must be. He's had two loan moves and shown nothing. The first of them couldn't have gone much worse ha.

maybe Leeds fancy him back..they could take a gamble on the fact he would feel at home there and that's all he needs. It'd still be a hell of a pay cut though, so he would have to really want to return there.

But the reality is he could well end up with a loan move there (or somewhere else) while we still pay his handsome salary.

Id imagine he'll officially be a city player until his contract runs out. Can't really blame him, we offered him it

When we bought him, I'm sure that Ngolo Kante was also up for grabs - he'd have been a shoe-in replacement for Fernandinho.

Can never understand long-term contracts being given to new players - the game's littered with top performers who for whatever reason just don't fit into a different team.

I simply don't understand our club offering 150k a week for 6 years for a bang average player for him to complete a move to the best team/club in Europe.

Should that type of player not want that move through desire to test themselves at the highest level and the moneyside should be almost irrelevant.

Also very unusual for us to go all in on this type of contract, we normally offered good /decent money to the likes of Silva, Aguero, Stones, Yaya etc with the promise of big wages increases/contract lengths for performance and success.

That’s what worries me. Right now he’s not even Leeds level. He’s what, mid table championship level? And I’m not even taking the piss when i say that.

Surely we can’t have him at city next season just stinking the training ground out, that would be insanity.

Wonder if we can cancel his contract and pay him up

NYC? Would they take him?

I think I read somewhere that City would accept 20 million for him. Can't see anybody willing to pay that for him.
20 million what, though?

Honestly, reading through this it's even more difficult to fathom Gareth Southgate's mid-Euros serious, considered excuse that "we never replaced Kalvin Phillips"

One wonders what EXACTLY went wrong there.

Homesick?
Too stupid to learn?
Complete loss of confidence?

Or, did the game just pass him by?

Never good enough. A stock car in a formula 1 team.
Its not that though it’s something else. He was a good player at Leeds and did okay for England. He should have been okay at either West Ham or Ipswich but he wasn’t so it isn’t ability its something else seems to have lost all his confidence and is a shell of his former self.

Looking back at his stats at Leeds, what's striking is how many tackles and interceptions he made per game, and also how many long passes. In the context of Bielsa's very specific man-to-man system, I think he just excelled (relatively speaking) doing that exact thing (win the ball and launch a counter with a long diagonal)
