4 | Kalvin Phillips - 2024/25

Harder to put the effort in when you're heading in the wrong direction career wise would be my bet.

As a professional who will have had to work hard and commit so much previously, ie before getting to City, I would have expected him to be motivated by the desire to get back playing.

Unless he is completely broken by his City experience.

The money will make him very comfortable financially, but his self-esteem must be gone / fucked if he isn't bothered about his game.

He was of seemingly a decent standard, was a regular for England. Makes a move to City and the penny drops. Can't be form if you stink the place out for years at City West Ham and Ipswich.
Can only think he has realised he ain't great and he's maybe unwilling to put the hard work in to play for mediocre teams.
Probably fallen out of love with it all? Who knows.

As I keep saying over and over whenever these discussions come up about him: the shoulder injury (and subsequent surgery) he got just as we signed him absolutely fucked him up. He's League One level at best these days.

A shoulder injury killed off Negredo and he was 10x the player at his peak. It makes movement painful and it makes throwing your weight around - crucial for a midfielder - almost impossible. You could see it clear as day when he was here.

A nice lad and a talented player, who would have performed well if he'd stayed fit. But he probably benefited a bit from being in Bielsa system (along with Patrick Bamford and a couple of other players from that 20/21 Leeds team) and then got screwed by that injury.

It happens. He's got a few big medals. More than 99% of players get. We're just going to have to keep loaning him lower and lower down the pyramid until his contract runs down (in four years) and he retires aged 32.
