Joey Barton calling Ian Cheeseman on GMR, 06/07

I was in my early teens back then and absolutely loved Barton. I was desperate just to see players giving a shit and he was one that went above and beyond on the pitch. Him and Dunnie were pretty much the only ones willing the die for the shirt. Even before he got in the first team, the travel he did just to get to training was immense.

I read his autobiography years ago and it's easy to see why he is the way he is. Once you've read it, it's hard to not feel sorry for him in a way
Why?
I read it as well. I have zero sympathy for the man.
Given the opportunities he’s had , more than most people could ever dream of having ten times over, yet still behaving like a twat constantly.
He’s nothing but an embarrassment

He got those opportunities himself. He wasnt handed them.

I didn't say he wasn't an embarrassment, I feel like you think I was defending him - I couldn't have made it clearer that I wasn't.

He had a horrible childhood - having young kids now I couldn't imagine them going through that.

Is it too soon for me to repeat my ‘I met Joey Barton a couple of times twenty years ago’ post?

I feel it’s still too soon.

Don’t ever want to get repetitive.

I met him after a Bury friendly. A lad asked for his boots, Barton said he'd just got them for the new season. Those were the days of one pair of boots for the season rather than what they have now.

What was he like when you met him?

Does anyone else remember this happening? I swear the audio used to be on YouTube.

It was after a defeat during the Pearce days. Barton rang up GMR and said he was unhappy with the squad. He said wasn't going to name names and then very obviously slagged off Samaras and Corradi for the next five minutes.

Like I said, I swear the audio used to be on YouTube but now I can't find it.
Barton thats the sign of a quality team mate..running to the media to slag off team 'mates'. He is just an all round d**k i used to try and see past this stuff as i liked him as a player in his pomp with us..( barr the racist attack) but looking back he is one of the few really dislikeable bitter characters in the game.

It was at a mutual friend’s wedding. He was alright. Gave it out a bit, and I gave it back which he didn’t mind. Not as clever as he thinks he is though. And no doubt he’s got a nasty streak in him.

Barton 100% knew what he was doing with that sort of interview (Cheap Shot) Manchester City fans are not daft or blind, We are Loyal, Barton was speaking because he was out the door and rightly so in my book

We all knew Nobody could compete with the top 4 because it was a closed shop back then. City was always fighting the damage done years ago by Swales, So any good young talent we had or produced was always going to be sold to balance the books, Barton was talking bollocks about buying young talent for the future.

Joey Barton was all Mouth and little talent, Manchester City was a hand-to-mouth club and we had to balance the books and play for the right here right now and no tomorrow or build for the future, I always thought Manchester City one day could be debt-free and start all over again and we could compete at the highest levels again because of the fan base we have,

But never in a million years was the turnaround going to happen like this, I love the little old city tag that the media and other clubs think we were because of United and Sky Premier League powers bad-mouthing us at any chance they had,

The football world forgets Manchester City was once a major club 2nd to nobody, even United was put in their place and City could beat anybody even send United down to the 2nd division.

Manchester City were never a small club, Just a badly run football club for far to long
tbf he definitely was one of the few who could pass a ball then... we were pretty dire but def worse when he wasn't on his game - but he does seem to have this ott bitter side...people say he is speaking his mind...fair enough but his mind must be full of sexist thoughts and the actions of a bully a lot of times. Wouldn't really want him in your drinking pals group - def go off at the drop of a hat (Begbie style)

3.0 down away to Spurs in the FA cup, Barton gets sent off at halftime? City down to 10 men win 4.3

I think 3 or 4 players at that time knew they controlled the team sheet, and dare you drop them
Barton Dunne Distin knew other clubs wanted them and the manager had to play them

Huw Edwards pleads guilty to having a ton of child pornography and gets a slap on the wrist. Someone calls someone a bike nonce and it costs them hundreds of thousands.

What a country.

Edwards also lost his reputation, career and family.

Barton could have stopped the legal action by retracting his comments and paying a nominal sum to charity.

Both only have themselves to blame.

He lost the bare minimum for being a nonce!!

From what I remember Barton asked which charity and never got a response.

Both bellends, but if you say you'll donate to charity if someone pays, then do it

For someone as reserved as he is, Nedum Onuoha threw him under the bus in his book. Anyone else would have pretty much used the phrase "walking piece of shit".

Mate I played for City and Sunderland as a kid , i promise you it’s as not as easy as you think , Barton was great for us end of and just my opinion he should be held in a higher regard by are/our fans , as I have said in previous posts him and Dunne , Distin and James kept us up 2 years on the spin and without them we would have been relegated and probably not been brought by the people now who we owe are success to .

He's a repugnant pig and he makes me ashamed that he ever played for this club.

Racist, misogynist homophobic thug.

What did he do that was racist? Genuine question as I haven't seen anything so would be interesting to see
He has been abusive to immigrants, backed his brother's racially motivated murder of Anthony Walker, used mulitiple slurs for asian people on his podcast and on twitter (since deleted I think), Eni Aluko has accused him of being racist to her as well. He's gross.

I believe Simon Munnery once said of Stewart Lee (who's one of my favourite comedians) 'He's not as clever as he thinks he is - but, then again, nobody is as clever as he thinks he is.'

For some reason this quote flashed into my head.
