Tony Towers?

I quite like their new stadium, in fact I’m off down there in an hour. From what I recall the Goldstone Ground was a right shithole. Got 2 memories of it, first one was a 4 0 battering, the other one was a one nil win with a late Kevin reeves goal and it was absolutely pissing down the whole match and the away end at the lovely goldstone ground had no roof - and iirc it was the game before Luton relegated us
I could be wrong because it was 40 odd years ago but I think the game where it lashed down was the 4 nil humping.

Thanks. I emailed the club last night, hope to get a response !
Apparently Tony is away at the moment, my contact has told me your email is being dealt with so hopefully it won't be to long before its sorted.....just have to be patient I guess, good luck

Wasn't it Tony who made way for Rodney Marsh? With the greatest respect to Rodney, that probably cost us the title that season.
I am not that convinced that the Marsh signing did cost City the title. City did have a lead but had tough matches to play and were inconsistent throughout the season.

I seem to recall after being eliminated from the FA Cup after a 3rd Round replay at Middlesbrough that City brought forward a league fixture at Liverpool (who were also out) to the weekend of the 5th Round and lost 3-0.

City’s away form (apart from Old Trafford) was patchy all season and it ended up a photo finish between the top four. City had a markedly inferior goal average to Derby, Leeds, and Liverpool.

If City had backed out of the Marsh deal, then no doubt that would have been cited as a reason for failure if they had not won.

No he was part of the deal for Dennis Tueart and Micky Horswill in 1974. Rodney came in March 72. Tony goes to Sunderland and then played for England. He was a good footballer, another the City fans had a go at same with Ian Bowyer.

I remember he scored the winning goal against Academica in a Cup Winners Cup tie. Wasn't the match delayed when Academica turned out in a all black kit, that clashed with the refs, and didn't have a change kit with them. Can't remember if City loaned them a change or the refs changed.
Yes. I remember that goal; City were all over Academica but couldn't get the ball in the net. In the final minute, there was a corner and TT smashed the ball home from around about the penalty spot.

I used to work as cabin crew ,about 20 years ago I flew with his delightful daughter. She was amazed I knew who he was.

Wyn Davies was also dropped for Rodney or am I wrong on that?
You are wrong. Wyn Davies played eight of the last nine games after Marsh arrived. He didn’t play in the final match against Derby County.

Just had that BT Infinity installed and got talking to the lad doing it. Turns out we were at school together in the mid 80's. He started saying how he was only here for 6 months as he moved to Tampa. He then said about how his dad was a footballer and at the end of his career went to America. 'Who was you dad mate?', I asked. 'Tony Towers', he replied.
Went on to say he was here during Marsh's era and Tueart.
Anyone remember him? Actually felt embarrassed when the obvious look of , 'sorry mate never heard of him' was etched on my face!

I remember him very well mate, I saw him play for us ....

Academica, my first ever City game. Can't remember much of the game, but that was the night I became a blue, for life.
Blimey , that was one of the very first City matches i attended ... I didn't think anyone else even remembered them, it was a lifetime ago!

Ended up at Brighton iirc.......probably played and scored against us at the old Goldstone ground
A proper ground that.not silly arena they play in now
Times change.

Robinson did score at Maine Road against United .... we won 2-0.

I thought he did a decent job for us.

I remember him scoring a screamer against WBA in the last game of the season at their place in 1973 to give us, in those days, a rare victory away from home.

The locals weren't best pleased because our win relegated them, which made the stroll down to Smethwick station to catch the special train home memorable.
