Section 50 of the Police Reform Act allows the police to ask for your name and address if they believe you are, or have been, engaging in anti-social behaviour.
with this it will be madatory, dangerous path into a police state
well it is as if you are that arsed about it you choose not to work for them, I applied for a job and required an alcohol liscence so I got one, if I was bother about me having photo ID requirements I wouldn't have. That’s just an argument for choice, but even a voluntary scheme will not be ‘voluntary’ if companies, both public and private, require you to use a Govt ID to access services. The left/right argument is redundant as a digital economy will require a standardised ID. Even the right to vote is tied to a photo ID these days. If you make a fundamental right such as voting dependent on a photo ID the Govt has to introduce a standardised ID to ensure equal voting access for everyone.
It might help if all employers followed the rules but the ones who don't now will continue regardless. Having the law is stage one, enforcing it is the trick. It's against the law to shoplift isn't it?
I have been stopped under section 60 at away games before and refused to give them my details as it isn't legally required, as it was getting off a connecting train obce and also in a pub garden, the police couldn't force it, now it will be mandatory and football fans especially will be targetted as with the DNA sprayThey’ve already stopped you and asked for your name and address. Not being allowed to stop you or ask for your details was on the other side of the Rubicon.
You haven't thought that through have you?

Apparently not. Please enlighten me .
What bit of “illegal” didn’t you understand?it will. This will make it much much more difficult for individuals without legal status to gain employment.
All working adults will be required to present a digital ID when starting a new job. This ID will be linked to a central database.
If they wanted to put a proper dent in criminal gangs they’d try a different approach to their drugs policy. Instead of the ridiculous way they’ve been going about it and failing for decades. It's another dent to illegal workers and criminal gangs, its not a major deal. we just now live in a time where everyone has to be outraged by any government decision.
Right so they’ve just suddenly come up with this policy then? (This was absolutely planned). This problem has been going on for years as well. Are you suggesting they had no plan beforehand? Are governments not allowed to think on their feet and adapt policies to developing situations?
Do they? The number of illegal immigrants entering and staying in countries like Germany, France and Italy have been through the roof.Exactly, they want to pass through all countries with ID card to get to UK where it is much easier.

Plus all governent and most public sectors worker as well as many private employment require a DBS already so checks are already in place on such staff.
On elections we all know that was brought in to discourage certain sections of society voting who would most likely not vote for the gocernment of the day.
What’s the developing situation here? They knew all about immigration for years. Are governments not allowed to think on their feet and adapt policies to developing situations?
Fuck me, shopping at Primark, now that is the lowest of the low.Whats the problem proving who you are? Don’t want ID card carry your passport on you, don’t have a passport carry your driving licence, don’t have one of them get an ID card. How many people just click cookies on the internet etc if your worried about people getting your information I’m sorry to inform you they already have it, they know you like dog porn and shopping at Primark.
I live in Spain but have sterling bank accounts for my pensions.Yes, so the argument now becomes - do you standardise all photo ID requirements into one document for a variety of services including the right to vote or work in this country?
As a native born Englishman, I do understand the instinctive rejection of being compelled to carry proof that I have the right to live or work here or ‘produce my papers’. But as I carry a photo ID driving licence (which I have to produce just to visit the bloody rubbish tip of all places) I can see the absurdity of having differing photo ID’s dependent on what I want to do. And in an increasingly digital economy a digital ID wallet is inevitable. This is as much about the economy that is to come rather than the world we grew up in. It’s for the next generation, not ours.
He was talking about digital id being introduced thirty years ago.
now it will be mandatory

Is it worth pointing out that no one is suggesting this will be the case?
If they wanted to make carrying ID a requirement, the government would have to change the law and get it through commons and lords which it wouldn’t even if they tried.

From what we’ve heard so far, with Starmer outlining more details in a few minutes, the proposal is not much more than linking a photo to your NI.
