Russian invasion of Ukraine

Why the dagastan Refinary?

Fermenting local discontent maybe?
Preventing supplies from Iran reaching Volgograd by removing local (Russian) fuel stops on the Caspian?

Another interview with Professor Clarke, only 6 minutes long so worth watching:

I was watching one of these at my girlfriend’s on my iPad the other week. She’s a bit of a hippy and refuses to watch a single war film, and was only listening in but she was clearly captured by what Professor Clarke was saying.

We discussed it subsequently and she commented how strange it was that someone so clearly benign and reasoned was so fascinated and enthused by warfare, given all it entails.

People are hugely complicated.

US lawmakers, including Republicans, have been waiting for a go-ahead from the White House to vote on a bill that would enforce steep sanctions against Russia and also target countries that purchase oil from the Kremlin.

“We are going to either announce after the close this afternoon— or first thing tomorrow morning, a substantial pickup in Russia sanctions,” Bessent told reporters at the White House Wednesday afternoon.

I wonder if Putin threatened the use of a tactical nuke to Trump in their phone call the other day.

That would seriously put a spoke in the wheels of the great peacemaker’s putative ability to resolve conflicts. He would not want to use of a nuke on his watch

Intellectualy, Trump and Putin is akin to putting an amateur flyweight boxer in the ring against a professional heavyweight champion.

An update, with Video of Trump answering questions.

Speaking alongside Rutte in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump said he hoped that the sanctions would help force a breakthrough.

He called the sanctions package "tremendous", and added that he hoped they could be swiftly withdrawn if Russia agrees to stop the war. He also criticised Putin for not being serious about making peace.

"Every time I speak to Vladimir, I have good conversations And then they don't go anywhere. They just don't go anywhere," he said.

The Trump administration on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies as it called on Moscow to agree to an immediate ceasefire in the war with Ukraine.

The sanctions hit Rosneft and Lukoil and almost three dozen of their subsidiaries. The United Kingdom targeted the two oil companies last week, and the European Union agreed to another package of sanctions on Wednesday.

Sweden sellling a lot of Grippens to Ukraine over the next 5 years - 150 of them!
