Metrolink to / from Etihad

If you are using it to travel from the Etihad-St Peters Sq., who is the idiot?
Maybe you ? The Trams on the Alty line were not running through the the Etihad, so a change was needed.

Also, have you not heard that not everyone is in their 20's or fully mobile? But thanks for your input Steve Cram :)

Stood in Piccadilly Station whilst trams to Eccles, Media City, Deansgate Castlefield & completely empty passed through before an Altrincham tram eventually put in an appearance. This organisation is utterly shite.
I know Metrolink is your bete noir Gray, but as a tip for Saturday 3pm games, its better to either walk to Market Street or stay on any tram to St Peters, and then the frequency to Altrincham doubles.

Choosing between walking, the bus and tram travel between the Etihad - Manchester City centre is a marginal decision in terms of time. The tram comes into its own when you are travelling further down the line.
Bollocks. Travel time from St Peters Sq to the Etihad is shown as a 12 min journey, more likely a touch longer. You're not walking it in that time.

I could hang around at the stadium until after 6pm, then get a direct tram to Altrincham. Would definitely consider that when the weather improves in the Spring.

I'm sorry Marvin but you keep pushing how good it is. It isn't.
Getting to a game on the Altrincham line involves changing at a stop, either at Cornbrook or in town and yet, when City aren't playing it runs directly to the Etihad and beyond. Weird.
Thats not a problem for me as I go for a drink in town but the problem comes then trying to get a tram. They are dangerously rammed full.
This line is closed or there are issues with it on many occasions.
I walk from the ground to Piccadilly. For night matches especially, people cannot board or have to shove on an already full to capacity Altrincham tram at St Peters Sq, Deansgate and Cornbrook.
If you haven't been to the match but are in town it is often not possible to get one.
There are other instances where it highlights that the people running the service haven't got a clue. Last season City played on a Sunday at 2pm. The same day was Chinese New Year with a big parade in town. Trams from Alty were singles every 12 minutes. They were so rammed one woman I spoke to had to let 3 go by as she couldn't get on.
If politicians don't want us using our cars they should provide a decent tram service.

At the moment we've literally got thousands of supporters travelling back to Piccadilly just to get a train in the opposite direction

Easy enough if you're fit enough to walk/run, but a long.and frustrating wait for those who aren't

Utterly ridiculous, and it won't change until the tramlines are extended to Bredbury and Stockport

It might never happen but we can always dream.

I think you might be disappointed as it looks like Didsbury will run the line through to Stockport. That means even more people being funneled into town. They should, but won't, build a circular line similar to the London tube.

Yeah like I said, there are loads of supporters being forced to go to Piccadilly, just to board a train to Stockport and beyond

Once I'm no longer fit enough to walk to Piccadilly I'll stop going.

No way will I ever choose between leaving early to beat the tram queue or queuing for up to an hour.

The trains are much better than Metrolink for longer journeys. Metrolink isn’t really built for long distance travel across the city. The city centre is too much of a pinch point, and a number of lines run on roads which restricts the speed they can go (some roads that Met lines are on are 20mph) or traffic can slow it down. I live in Wythenshawe and I could feasibly beat the Met from near me to the Etihad, on a bicycle.

The service is better for traveling between 1 and half a dozen stops. Having a Met line to Stockport would be best for someone traveling from Didsbury to Stockport, not for Matchday travel from the Etihad all the way back to Stockport.

It’s a shame so many pubs have shut around the Etihad. More pubs could filter numbers accessing the Met over a longer period of time as people have a few pints instead of just going straight to the Met.

I think you're seriously underestimating the number of supporters in the post match tram queue who then pack the trains that go through Stockport

It's also the biggest reason for the early leavers because it's the only way to beat the queue.

Also, whilst I agree about the lack of suitable pubs around the Etihad we've still got a huge proportion of 65+ fans who just want to get home,

For the Sunderland game I drove to Navigation Road tram stop at 1pm and when I arrived on the platform there was a tram due to Bury in 2 minutes the next tram was going to Piccadilly.

Both trams were single units so I caught the Bury tram and got off at Cornbrook. An Etihad tram was due in 2 minutes and low and behold that was also a single unit. You can imagine the state of overcrowding as people tried to get on at Deansgate, St Peter’s Square, the Gardens and the Station.

The people running this dreadful service are irresponsible and completely incompetent.

A PL football match and Christmas Markets and they stick on SINGLE units, bloody criminal.

Sorry, what I meant is that even if there was a Metrolink line to Stockport, you’d still be better off getting the Met to Piccadilly and the train to Stockport because Mets are so slow for long distance cross-city travel that you’d still get home more quickly on the train.

Is it still a 12-15 minute journey from Picc to Stockport? Even with the Met queue at the Etihad you’d still beat the Met home. You’d be talking 1h on the proposed Didsbury extension to Stockport on the Met. Maybe more because you’d have to change at Cornbrook so don’t know how long you’d be waiting there between Mets.

I am walking back to town when they are walking to the Etihad tram stop, and standing still in the queue. That is why the majority of fans walk back to the City centre. Trams / heavy rail are designed to get people from the suburbs into Manchester and out.

I think we're at slightly cross purposes mate as despite being 61, I'm still relatively fit and often walk/run from the Etihad to Piccadilly rather than catch the tram.

My whole Pre-match and occasionally Post Match experience is spent drinking in the Bull at Piccadilly, as I still go to City with my school friends, and have done since the late 1970s

If it was purely about speed then I'd catch Matchday Bus 7 (as I did for the Dortmund CL game) have nobody to talk to, and eventually die a lonely death (tongue slightly in cheek)

My suggestion was aimed at giving supporters more options which would surely dilute the impact and irritation surrounding such lengthy queues

Didn't the original plans involve a metrolink to Stockport/Bredbury?
