He’s sacked all the others so the new one is in panic mode. Have you not noticed how he has recently been more forceful in his voice, fake anger if you like but it’s all designed to show “you are passionate” and “mean business” but it just doesn’t come naturally to him and makes him look like a tit.

I think in politics you need at least 1 of 2 important characteristics. Ideally both.

You need either to be demonstrably super capable, effective, commanding respect. Or you need to be likeable, have some charisma and charm that people warm to.

Thatcher had the former, certainly in her first terms. Blair was unusual and had both. Brown had a bit of the former, none of the latter. Cameron so-so on both.

Starmer scores zero on both categories. Toast.

Probably right and I would also add being a convincing speech maker (salesman?). Good political speakers seem to be able to convince their listeners that what they are selling is gold despite the packaging stating clearly 'made of lead'. So both Farage and Polanski may be talking through their ar***oles but they have both found a receptive audience who believe that the MOT failure they are selling really is as good as a Ferrari. For me, I want politicians to sell reality rather than fantasy so Starmer, not perfect by any means, will be a loss.

I agree with your general comment. Effective communication e.g. in presentations is critical and from my experience often works best if the speaker can manage a bit of humour. The best presenter at Oracle when I worked there was a Scottish bloke whose name escapes me but he used to have the audience roaring with laughter at the beginning of his presentations. We used to actively look forward to them and listen intently throughout.

Having said all of that, I think Starmer doesn't give it you "straight". I think he's a bare-faced liar (as many of them are), he's just rubbish at it. People have come to not believe a word he says.

Edit: I’m not a small boats obsessive as it’s a relatively small part of the migration system. I’m more commenting from the perspective of your position that Starmer is delivering but poorly communicating his successes

Labour manifesto pledged about 7 or 8bn in tax rises and 7 or 8bn in extra spending.

As of today it’s £50bn of tax rises and £80bn of extra spending implemented.

So by your metric Labour are economically illiterate.

I must say on the Comedy Gold front this morning Darren Jones had me laughing like a drain when he said that "strategy meetings" like this should be held in private. I'm laughing typing it.
