Keir Starmer

Starmer was at Leeds Uni when I was there and went out with a girl I knew from Xavarian College.

Didn't know him but there were so many southerners like him who claimed to be working class that I thought that I must have dreamed about my upbringing in Longsight.

Arguably Labour could say that they've been restrained by what the last government left and so have been unable to really do much which is actually partially true. With Starmer there were many comparisons to the likes of Blair but you have to remember that Blair didn't start fixing the country with his ankles tied first. GDP-debt was half then compared to now.

This however paints a far more grim picture then we're prepared to admit because it actually means that there is no need for a government or even an election. Really we just have to grumble and wait to die, presumably after a 12hr wait in A&E first.

Another poster mentioned stupidity but actually the current government and its approach has been wholly sensible to the point that it has exposed this grimness and encouraged it. The rejection of this reality in favour of fantasy is the problem.

Wait till the candidates to take over are put up - Rayner ?

She would be able to match Trump is diplomacy and level of gravitas !

Agreed about the huge parliamentary mandate not being backed up by any popular mandate. That was always going to be tricky in terms of being popular.

But that overlooks a key issue. Governments don't have to be popular to be successful. Powerful leaders set out a vision, tell the country and political their opponents (their own or the opposition's) how it is and that if they don't like it they can kick us out in 5 years but until then STFU.

Starmer has had no reason to behave like he had a majority of 10 all the time. He had the power from day 1 to lay out his stall and stick to it. Repeatedly doing stupid things and repeatedly u-turning has been his undoing. And the persistent lying.
That is true in terms of his behaviour. He had every opportunity to really take the battle to the right wing press and Farage from day 1. He has bottled it every time. He could have done stuff in his first couple of months that was popular and visible to everyone to give them a ‘feel better’ factor. He didn’t. Even when they have implemented positive change they have botched the comms round it. They are reactive rather than proactive. Set out a vision for the country based on values and addressing wealth inequality. Surround it with visible initiatives that will support that vision then communicate the hell out of every one of them. Get the trains running on time at a fair price. Fix the bloody pot holes. Fix the water industry - if that requires serious litigation then do it. Step on the neck of anyone that gets in the way of all that including press and media. Too fucking soft and too fucking timid.

I've worked in the Civil Service and am proud to have done so. I worked with many brilliant, hardworking and dedicated colleagues, so you can fuck right off with your Daily Mail cheap shots you ignoramus.
I’ve never read the Daily Mail in my life and I know of many lazy and untalented Civil Servants and Local Government Officers who have no imagination or worthwhile ideas, just T crossers and I dotters.

I don’t doubt there’s some decent ones, not even arsed you’re blowing your own trumpet but there’s plenty that take a decent salary, have a great pension hardly matched anywhere else and invariably retire very early.

Compare and contrast with someone of the same ability in the private sector and not only are their jobs at risk during difficult economic times they’re also earning far less.

I’ve had the misfortune to deal with some right wankers at the HMRC, from during Covid times when they were working from home and took an eternity to answer the phone. They’re also pretty good at cutting you short when it gets to the stroke of 5pm, that doesn’t happen in the private sector from experience.

I won’t lower myself to a personal comment such as you signed off with, I take it you weren’t employed for your diplomacy and tact, blocked.

The media's role in all this is disgraceful. Trying to create a resignation story rather than reporting the news is disgusting. Shouting at and haranging Cabinet Ministers walking down Downing Street this morning is frankly shameful. I'm no fan of Starmer but the media in this country has a lot to answer for.
These days they are a fifth column not the fourth estate

And on a serious note, pics of the girl ?

Jess Phillips resignation statement in full

Dear Keir
I want to start by first saying that we have worked closely together on Violence Against Women and Girls for many years and I have no doubt you have genuine knowledge and desire to rectify this dreadful social ill. We have started to make steps towards change whilst in government and I have been grateful for your support.
However, it would be remiss of me not to say that real change and direction in this area usually came from threats made by me in light of catastrophic mistakes. The Mandelson saga whenever it bubbled up made Number 10 kick into gear on the subject in order to prove our credentials. I will never waste a crisis to make advancements for women and girls and so demands were made and some were met.
I think you are a good man fundamentally, who cares about the right things however I have seen first-hand how that is not enough. The desire not to have an argument means we rarely make an argument, leaving opportunities for progress stalled and delayed.
Over a year ago I presented solutions, long worked on by brilliant civil servants that would end the ability for children in the UK to take naked images of themselves. 91% of online child sex abuse is self-generated by children groomed, tricked and exploited in to abuse. The technology exists to stop children being able to take naked images of themselves. We could make this possible on every phone and device in the country. We could stop this abuse. It has taken me a year to get you to agree to even threaten to legislate in this space. Not legislate, just threaten. This is the definition of incremental change. Nothing bold about it. The announcement was meant to be in March, I’m still on a promise this will happen in June, I’ve given up believing it. How many children were left without a safety net in the time we dilly dallied and worried about tech bosses?
This is just one example.Labour governments come around rarely is the constant refrain at the moment. It’s true they are precious. Every Labour government in my and my family’s lifetime has forged progress that changed our country and the world for the better. I know you care deeply, but deeds, not words are what matter. I’m not sure we are grasping this rare opportunity with the gusto that’s needed and I cannot keep waiting around for a crisis to push for faster progress.
Decency is vital, calm curiosity is also needed, but so too are fight and drive required. Have a row, push back, make arguments, bring people along. Standing up and being counted can’t always be workshopped. Politics is as much about feelings as policy, especially at the moment.
I want a Labour government to work and I will strive as I always have for its success and popularity, but I’m not seeing the change I think I, and the country expect, and so cannot continue to serve as a minister under the current leadership.
Wow!

But he has form:

"
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage breached MPs' rules 17 times by failing to register financial interests totalling £384,000 within the 28-day limit, the parliamentary commissioner for standards has ruled.

Daniel Greenberg said that following an investigation, external he had concluded that the breaches were "inadvertent" and therefore would not be recommending any sanctions for the Clacton MP.

He added that Farage had apologised and had promised to meet the deadline in the future.

The interests that Farage failed to report on time include payments from GB News, Google, X and the Cameo app.
In his reply to the commissioner, Farage said he was "sincerely sorry" for the rule breaches adding that there had been "no malicious intent".

He also said he had been "extremely let down by a very senior member of staff".

During a meeting with the commissioner on 11 December 2025, Farage said he had been "a little bit shocked" by the "gross administrative error".

"You may say, why don't I enter those things myself. Well I don't do computers... so I rely on other people to do those things for me.

"I'm not, I'm afraid, computer literate, which makes me yet more an oddball than perhaps I was before."

That was a report from January of this year. Now, wouldn't you think that if all was above board with the £5m bung, he would have mentioned it at the stage he was being investigated for other stuff ? It has also gone very quiet regarding the Clacton property that his girlfriend "bought" despite her having no income. I wonder who approached who regarding the £5m.

"Hi Chris, Nigel here. I know I'm not an MP or ever will be again but can you give me £5m for my security that the government won't give me becasue I'm no longer involved in politics (according to Tice over the weekend)"

or

"Hi Nigel, Chris here. I'm really worried about your well being so how about me giving you £5m for nothing. I know you're not in politics any more so can't have impact on UK crypto legislation so let me just transfer it to you as a gift.
My take on these things is how the fuck does someone breach MP rules 17 times and still becomes an MP and maybe even PM. The system is corrupt and people are just arguing about who is the worst culprit. Taking the piss and people stick up for the fuckers. They must be pissing themselves about how easy it is to get away with shafting us.

Wait till The Ed Davey Alton Towers story hits, front of the corkscrew queue ****.

is there a breakdown anywhere of who the MPs are? I wonder how many are 2024 intake.
No cabinet members have resigned yet, as far as I know - just junior ministers, some of whom might attend cabinet but are not cabinet.

A friend and ally of the most prolific international paedophile of our generation, that failed security vetting, which the PM lied to Parliament over, oh and someone Mandelson had previously leaked state secrets to, was one of Starmer’s better appointments?

Fuck me.
Ide prefer not to, but thanks for the offer.

I think the Jess Phillips statement is not getting the discussion it deserves, if you the read the below and don't believe he deserves the elbow just for this alone then its a dark day imho.

They just listed them on the beeb so it will be out there.

Ta, quite a few names I recognise from being there before 2024.
Was just interested to see who was there - they list 90 names as having "criticised Starmer" which is odd wording. Presumably it's the same "more than 80" that's also mentioned.
