Otamendi

And the delusion mule train rolls merrily along.
Haha of course, when the "biggest club in the world" come calling there can be no other option. Otamendi is only signing for us just so he can be near his beloved Old Trafford where he has held a season ticket for the last 20 years.

For me adds healthy competition to defence, he will be needed when the cup competitions and suspensions/injuries kick in. Of course Deneyar's development should not be impeded but looking twelve months ahead with Martin gone he will be an integral part of central defence. I think too many people are looking negatively at this signing instead of positively at it.

We are signing one of the best central defenders in Europe, a player who can finally address what has been a problem position in recent times and go a long way to helping us regain the title, and people are turning on the club because some 20 year old kid with no relevant experience against top level opposition might spit his dummy out?!

If Virgil Van Dijk's sidekick isn't happy with having to wait and earn his right to a first team place at one of the biggest clubs in Europe, then he can do one.

I like Denayer as a footballer, but as a central defender the jury is still out, and I'd rather he make the inevitable rookie errors elsewhere. We lost the league by 8 points last year, points that we dropped (and more) due to individual defensive errors from Kompany, Mangala and Demichelis. While they were floundering, Otamendi was tackling everything that moved in the Spanish league, without exception. Messi, Suarez, Bale, Ronaldo and Neymar all found him an unbeatable barrier.

The coaching staff have had over a month to analyse our defensive options, and have concluded that they're not adequate to win back the title and progress in Europe.

Our business this summer has been impeccable. Every department has been strengthened and for this Txiki deserves a lot of credit.

I know a lot of fans would have preferred us to stick Denayer in the team and waste £100m on Pogba, but luckily those that matter at the club live in the real world and understand what is required for us to take the next step towards establishing ourselves as an elite club.

Doubt there is one single person on this forum who has advocated Denayer being City's main cb.

According to AS, was PELLEGRINI who asked Mangala not to leave on loan to Valencia..

Otamendi to Manchester City for 45 million plus extras
Mangala not definitely comes into operation. Pellegrini changed his mind with him, told him he would take into account and French stopped their march.

Nicolas Otamendi will be Manchester City player officially in the coming hours. Valencia and City have closed the deal at 45 million euros plus variables after falling Mangala operation. The French defender has not directly the spanish club rejected, but more it has to do with Pellegrini changing his mind. Delighted with his performance, the Chilean coach told Mangala after the game against Chelsea that he count with him and maybe he was wrong when a week earlier had warned that would be the the sub defender, when he got Otamendi. That prompted a change of mind in Mangala.

All this talk of the players being hungry again, it's signings like this that fuel that hunger.

For a team that has undoubtedly been complacent in the past, competition for places is a good thing. Just improving the squad is a good thing in general.

An .A. Comment I can put my stamp of approval on :). This is a 1st.

You're well within your rights to tell me to fuck off but I'd just repeat it back. I've got match going mates like you are we have right barnies going to and from games. He's never happy. If we signed Messi, he'd complain it would hold Lopes back.

If Denayer is half the player you and he thinks he is, then a second loan this season is still far bettere for his prospects than moving permanently to the Spurs of this world instead of signing that five year contract.

The world just seems so impatient these days. CB for hopefully one of the top four sides in Europe at 20 is neigh on unheard of and to be honest, even without Otamendi, he's best having a year on loan at Everton or similar this year than making 20 starts for City. His time will come.

Haha, I don't think I'm as extreme as your mate like, but I probably do lean somewhere on the glass half empty spectrum. It's a personalities thing though, little to do with the football. We're all different in that respect.

Just find it tedious that I'm led to feel the need to justify my credentials as a blue when I may reflect upon a negative among the positives.

Fair enough, give me stick about something you perceive to be a 'glass half empty' moan, but I shouldn't have to justify my credentials as a blue.

Funnily enough, one of the main reasons I reflect on the critical stuff on here, is because my mates are very much of the same disposition as yourself mate! Arguments and stick aplenty.

One thing I'd just like to ask is that you recognise that any criticism comes from the same place your positivity does - wanting what's best for City. It's not to have a mindless pop, it's to express real concerns and anxieties. It's frustrating when such opinions, given frankly and in depth, are dismissed outright because they may bear certain hallmarks of a 'negative' poster.

But I digress, here's to turning over Everton on Sunday.

I'd be fine with him making 20 starts for City tbh. Even if it's not at cb..That's what they did with Lakey, fullback etc.

It's the idea of him getting Dedryked that concerns me. He needs Demichelis to go if he's going to get even sniff imo though.
Whilst Demechelis has been our best defender since Christmas 2013 he began to look old and tired towards the end of the season, IMO
He made a few ricks in the spurs game that are so unlike him, and Mangala covered his arse.
I would hope that it's Denayer and MDM competing for that fourth spot, Otamendi is here to cover for the lapses both Vinnie and Mangala sure capable of

excellent post, I've called you some names in the past, but this is an excellent post

Since Mangala wont go on loan this is good signing. If kompany gets injured or Mangala fucks up in future we have more than decent cover. Hopefully Pellegrini isnt stupid enough to drop Mangala straight away just because of this signing. Denayer must be kicking himself for signing contract though lol, 5th in pecking order now since its quite obvious now that MDM will get more play time.

Otamendi SHOULD improve our defending in Europe, which has been tragic at times - from Ajax's kids and journeymen embarrassing us to Kompany ducking Ronaldo's shot to Doumbia looking like Pele to Joe Hart's career best sparing our blushes. Otamendi has experience against the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Bale and was outstanding in La Liga last season. His physical features should allow him to cope with the things he doesn't have to worry about as much in Liga (unless playing a team like Atletico). This is a quality signing if all goes well and I see no reason he won't adjust. He isn't tall but has a GREAT leap, much like Sagna (who wins tons of aerials despite being small). He is also ridiculous off corners if we can find his head.

A few people have genuinely had him in their line-ups when putting up how we should look this season, next to Kompany as first choice.

Can't disagree that Demi made some fuckups but the whole defence was a fuckup last season to me, & the whole team defensively so it's hard to say whether that's a sign of the general malaise imo. Zaba & VK were City's two worst defenders last season for me.

But I'd like to see us bite the bullet now & let Demi go.

I think Otamendi is being bought for the Champions League.

I just think as we saw in his highlights against the the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, Suarez etc.. in La Liga last season, he can put in a good shift against that quality of player.

I actually think his size is better suited to dealing with a Messi or a Suarez for example.

Bizarre. I mean, if he got a chance & took it then I'd keep him in the team, but realistically it was always Kompany /Mangala 1st choice barring fuckups. No idea what it is now.

There are two CM positions, two players for each position: Yaya Fernandinho Delph and Demichelis would be a good fit for the four for me.

Kompany Mangala Otamendi and Denayer the four for the two CH positions.
