Club Badge (merged)

Thanks Gary, it's interesting how the photo is not even of Gorton St Marks as many assume.

It's been one of the more curious elements of the consultation for me how many people want the cross included. There are so many negative connotations of crosses like that, and it's puzzling why so many people want it included just because of the loosest of historical links.

When was the photo discovered Gary? I thought it was a fairly recent discovery, yet some people talk about the cross as if it's always been associated with the founding of the club and this is our chance to reclaim it. I personally have no affiliation to that cross whatsoever, and I'd be stunned if it was used.
There are references to the cross in publications from years ago, but that photo was only rediscovered c.2002. I used it in my 2005 version of the MCFC Complete Record - the first time it was published. It is amazing how quickly these things become folklore or myth. Next we'll be erecting a statue to Anna Connell (don't get me started on that one!).

I'm not sure what the roman banner badge is mate?

I'm not a big fan of the eagle either, doesn't feel 'City' to me but I don't hate it. If we were to stick to the current badge it wouldn't be the end of the world.

But all of the redesigned versions of the eagle, especially the ones inside a circle are just an absolute disaster. If we ended up with anything like that it would feel even less 'City' than the current effort.

I'm glad some of us are flying the flag of common sense.

This one..the overall design has promise...with a little tweaking it could be good

Horrendous.

Everyone's got different taste, but seriously I think this is the worst design on the entire thread.

The outside is fine, the inside is just wrong on so many levels.

The cartoon squashed eagle that looks like it's being viewed through a fish bowl isn't even instantly recognisable as the eagle we've got now, so it kind of defeats the object.

The ship and stripes in a circle doesn't really make any sense either. They appear in a shield on the CoA and all of our badges in history, putting them in a circle for no apparent reason just doesn't make any sense from a symbolic or design point of view. The only reason they seem to be in a circle is so you can see the 'wings' of the squashed bird.

Then why is M.C.F.C included when the full name of the club is around the outside? Makes no sense and smacks of overkill.

I think the only way to make this badge worse is if you replaced the 1894 with "#Cityzens"

A little tweaking with a sledgehammer would give it promise. Am I being birdist?

I can take or leave the eagle but the people who like it are being reasonable whereas the people that don't are coming across as a bit weird to me. Why get so mad over it? It's birdist! ;-) in trying to convince people that there are no City fans that want it you are likely to increase its support. In fact yeah I want the eagle now so ner.[/QUO

I did put a ? before I stated it was a photo of st marks, I went to your lectures and you made it very clear that there is a big problem with the truth of this based on the photo. I am just not worried about its connection to he nazis because It's potential connection to us predates that, and I would actually like to know about Anna Connell if you could tell me please

Thanks. I wouldn't get hung up on the German use of the Iron Cross, it predates Gorton AFC anyway from what I remember from my lessons on Bismark at school, but in terms of Gorton its appearance on the shirt is unclear. It could be connected to religion, it could be connected to freemasonry (my 'gut' feel), and some have even suggested it's connected to a campaign for men/boys to refrain from self abuse (I kid you not!). On Anna Connell... I've covered that in detail in Amazon product ASIN 0955812771. The opening chapters are free to read in the Look Inside function.

Ah I see the "Boring James Milner Brigade" are out in full force here(all 4 of them) against our "extravagant eagle", you see they like things simple with plain colours and no surprises... bless them. :)

Quedos to you Gary for making the effort to research so thoroughly. A labour of love if ever there was one.

I wonder how crazy this thread will get when they announce the final badge design to us. It's actually quite amusing thinking about the rage that will inevitably ensue. :)

expecting half will be wishing for the current badge to remain in the end lol

I researched that Pell not Pep pulls 100% of his figures from his ass. Eagle stays. ;)

Not quite 100%. Joking aside though it'll be interesting to know what the next stage will be. I hope it comes down to a vote for season ticket holders, cityzens and members. Can't really see a fairer way of doing things than that. I don't agree the club have already made up their minds about what the badge will look like. I hope their are two or three to vote on then there's no argument about what is and isnt fair. If the eagle gets the vote I'll be gutted but im chuffed to bits what's happened to City the last seven years so it's about the bigger picture. Btw I'm only trying to inject a bit of humour with my posts. What's happening in the world at the moment is so sad so why not try and have a laugh along the way.

Yeh I gathered your percentages were to be taken tongue in cheek hence the ;). Although there has been some quite strong and angry opinions here though it has to be said haha :)
