John Stones

Why is the desperate logic that Mangala will suddenly cease to be bad not being applied to the apparently bad Stones though?

I'm not one of the folks saying he is bad...would probably be decent...but not 50 mil decent

If i'm honest i'd rather look at what we have...at least in central defence...maybe one in for Martin leaving...Clichy/|Sagna/Kolorov are more of a worry now...they are not getting any younger

If Pep can work magic them i'm suggesting he does it to fix our problems not other clubs problems. Stones might be great under Pep but he isnt great under Martinez!
Any magic would be finding a buyer for Mangala, who isn't exactly great right now so I don't get your last point.

Fantastic potential - could be England's version of Maldini for the next 10 years. A no brainer for me given Pep's coaching and tactical acumen.

The only thing that worries me about Stones is that he needs a supportive partner in CB, not one who will knock him down for a mistake. As much as I love Vinny I will never forget him tearing a trip out of Nastasic on the pitch against Chelsea. Nasti was never the same again, not even sure he ever played again?

hes a fantastic young player. yes he's making mistakes, but he's young and the type of football he tries to play that could happen. people in this country like to ridicule young players, examples being kane, sterling, barkley.

Even after his first great season people were saying he was a one season wonder and when he wasn't scoring at the beginning of the season - he wasn't good enough. same with barkley and sterling now as soon as they have a few bad games they are shit and aren't good enough.

stones clearly has the talent to be a very good defender.

I still have faith in Mangala. I think and hope that he will thrive under Pep and that Pep will be able to make him into Boateng 2.0 !

Unfortunately for stones he's sufferer in the fate of a lot of promising young English players - overhyped. Unfortunately the increasing rate of his mistakes suggests to me the hype is going to hus head rather than learning from them.

The only problem Stones has is with his decision-making. I'm sure that could be sorted

Not sure we need a defender. Otamendi, Mangala, Kompany. It will come down to whether Kompany has a good Summer

He keeps trying to come back for City/Belgium when he needs rest

Barry and Hart have been seriously good buys for us, Lescott, Milner and AJ were hardly disasters though the first two were a bit expensive but Lescott no more so than a lot of defenders we have subsequently bought and junked.

Delph looks just as good a buy as Garcia or Fernando though the jury is still out.

I think Sterling will come good and has certainly been better at a higher price than Jovetic or Bony.

English players have a bit of a premium but they are not universally crap, that said I wouldn't be happy paying a large premium for Stones.
Hart, Barry and Delph were cheap so no issue there. Bargains. We should be finding more similar decent English players without the premium prices. Just forget the big money buys.

Milner and Lescott were ok but limited. Not sure they were worth the money. I'd argue that we are now positioned to develop English academy players just as good.

Sterling might make it but is way overpriced. I'm sure we could spend that money wiser.

Money not wasted can go on real superstars or on cheaper tickets :-)

Not all that sold on Stones. Makes some good passes but also his positioning is off and his mistake lead to the penalty yesterday.

For what its worth, I think the kid has kind of lost interest at Everton. He is earning a third of what their offer was and is playing for a manager with no defensive nous, who praised him one minute them benched him the next.

I dont think he will go for 50m, moreso 30 with addons up to 40m. Last summer he was on a high, now he is on a downer, if we are to buy then now is the time as the price will be lpwer

Chelsea had a £40m bid rejected for him in the summer, can't see him going for any less than that up front.

And like yourself, I'm not all that convinced, especially at that kind of price though.

Think we'd be better served trusting Denayer and going after Laporte.

He's worth nowhere near the huge sum Everton want. My biggest issue with Stones is his actual lack of physicality for a defender.
Biggest issue is whether he's good enough

Can Kompany, Mangala and Otamendi form a defensive partnership between them, and if not could Stones be the answer.

I am hoping Kompany's injury settles down over the Summer and that the other two players settle in.

I think Stones has a great chance of becoming a top centre-back. He isn't there yet but it's not difficult to imagine him playing for one of the top clubs and being an outstanding centre-back for years to come. Hasn't had a good season though. His game has gone backwards. Needs to be mentally strong to prove the doubters wrong. I don't think Martinez has helped him much.

i think the obsession with having ball playing centre backs has ruined a lot of what made english defending good. we now have stones being an example a player who is great at passing, but can't defend. same with otamendi. our best defence was when we had lescott at the back.

After his engerland performance he has the qualities to be one of ours...
