Pep's tactics

I already think that no matter whatever else Pep does in his career, he has one thing from his time at City that he can use to demonstrate his genius: Kolarov.

A player who, quite rightly, was berated by a lot of fans (myself included) and who we ALL surely thought would have been gone before the first ball was kicked. A player who brought groans when his name was included in the teamsheets at the beginning of the season, yet who now looks like one of the first on the teamsheet at either LB or CB (say whatttt?!).

He had a cameo in midfield last night and actually left me excited at how often it allowed him to find space for a shot on goal, we know how deadly his left foot is.

Pep has turned Kolarov from zero to hero literally in the space of 6 weeks. Incredible man management.

I think credit should also go to Kolarov himself. He started preseason top fit (unlike other players) with an attitude to make all us fans eat their words, and has never looked back since. However it really is not that big a surprise as Pep seems only interested in the players' capacity on the ball and his versitallity. And Kolarov is that kind of player, although he received justified critics last season (the scapegoat thing was a bit overdone). Not sure if it's just Pep's manmanagement. It's Pep learing the player to brighten his horizon with Kolarov clever enough to understand and perform like Pep wants it.
We 've made some wild guesses about players leaving of not being a Pep kind of player. Hart out, Kolarov to stay? That bet would have made me a fortune if it was just on Blue Moon.

Fascinating tactically last night, Kolarov and Stones coming into midfield. KDB has a total free role in the middle and Sterling was swapped sides last night probably to play against the weaker full back. The only person who seemingly has an actual tactical position is Otamendi and Bravo... Even Silva not playing I think was a tactical decision just to keep them guessing.

Under Pellegrini we setup pretty similar but the difference is the free movement and intelligence on the ball. Before we were rigid and relied on brute force or magic to create but now it just happens because of the total freedom to move and create the space to make things happen. You can't defend or man mark against us, it is impossible. How can you mark KDB or track Gundogan when suddenly Stones is stood in midfield too, what do you do? Do you press him and allow Sterling in behind or Gundogan or KDB? It is an absolute nightmare to defend against. The only option is to put 11 men behind the ball and forget worrying about the movement and mark the space instead but then your 30% possession will turn into 0%...!

We are setup now to make it impossible to plan and figure us out and that is down to the manager. Individual brilliance barely comes into it because I can't name a single player who is outstanding because they all equally have been. I even thought Sergio had a quiet game but he still scored 3 goals!

As for Pep I don't know how he sleeps at night, he must sit down for 2 minutes a game, he never stopped living the match, bollocking Stones, gesturing at the team, telling them where to stand, who to mark, keeping them on their toes. The man is an absolute fruit cake, a personality and a genius, I think we have got with him far more than we could ever have hoped for here.

Hahaha. Definitely, he's quite bonkers.

Guess you have to though to be the manager he is.

“If one of them is sleeping, I’m sorry next time you’re going to sleep at home, another one is going to play in your position."

That cough in the press conferences is worrying me now

The last thing we need is him leaving because of ill health

I'm already having thoughts of, what do we do when Pep leaves!!! Crazy i know so soon, but the transformation has been that vast in the team... In almost unbelievable what he has done.

Can we not get someone in behind the scenes, have him shadow Pep every day, become a Pep_lite, learn his ways, his actions, everything, then, when the time comes, he can take over and become the first unheard of manager of an elite club.

Yeah, crazy, i know. I just want him to sign that 20 year extension now....

Tuchel is trying to do things very similar to Pep and I am sure they are good friends.
Pep wanted Tuchel to take over him at Bayern.

Depending on if a club gets ahead of us and takes him from Dortmund, Tuchel could be the man.

The way the defenders would constantly move 10 yards forward into the midfield to open up the passing lanes was so good to see. Allowed us to bypass their first line with ease time and time again and start another attack.
Spot on with that. When they tired and couldn't press so well second half, they had no answer to it. So simple, you just need defenders who can play.

1. Hire Lothar Matthaus to explain what a stupid and stubborn coach Pep was.
2. Hire Carlo Ancelotti to free the players from Guardiola's chains.

Joking aside, Tuchel could continue Guardiola's legacy. He's a big fan of Pep and positional play with high pressing.

I think players like Kolarov (and maybe Otamendi) became bored under Pelle. Unimaginative training, same tactics week in week out, no 'use your brains' during games, etc. Pep has engaged them, made them feel intelligent and created solidarity in the squad. Last season we moaned about lack of leadership on the pitch without VK. This season there are leaders all over the pitch. These two are the best examples but you could also add Silva, Fernandinho. KDB, Johnny Stones and probably Gundogan. Superb man management by Pep as you say.

I think prior to the rags game Pep managed to not only confound the Peg, but most of us as well. False 9's, a 3/6 formation, fullbacks in midfield etc etc. we ran through the gamut of possibilities after the Kun suspension. So what does Pep do? The bleeding obvious and replace striker with striker.

Personally I love the movement of players all over the park. Half the time I have no idea who is playing where, but that adds to the excitement. Against Gladbach Kolarov bobbed up in midfield and then almost scored as an attacking midfielder. No wonder the opposition Managers must be having nightmares about facing Peps tactics.

This is beautiful to watch. Long may it continue.

Probably the journo that best understands Pep - Marti. I suggest folks to not generally take any other journo's claims to knowing Pep. Pep is a private person, genius, so a tad socially awkward like all geniuses are. And he absolutely hates entertaining media with inanities or self-praise & other blase things. Only football interests him. And he is extremely passionate & intense about how and why he does things. Nothing personal. But bastards in media try to reduce him to other scum & muck-throwing pigs who call themselves coaches, stars, big personalities, pundits, etc. They want all of us to view pep with the same lens as we view most scums in football. U gotto first respect the genius for who he is, arguably the greatest mind in european football over the last 3 decades. U sure need not agree with him, or even not like him at a personal level, but he spends every minute, I mean ALMOST every minute trying to improve the team/club he coaches. Fasten the seatbelts. The journey is the most exciting. And trust pep for he always leaves his clubs in a very healthy state. He makes almost every player he coaches a better football player. So the legacy he leaves is guaranteed to be healthy. And the great thing about him is that he doesnt care about the plaudits. He just loves his work! And I hv a strong intuition that Pep is here for the long haul (>5y). City can be his baby, in the new era, especially thanks to the freedom his bosses will give him (hopefully it continues). With barca & bayern, it was not possible, and yet, he defined an era in both those clubs.

That's an apt comparison, taking into account the huge baggage Maureen brings everywhere with him and it's incurable habit of turning vicious.
Fantastic, although any non Pratchett readers will be thoroughly whooooshed.
