    Going veggie.

My wife's family are all Buddhists, took me to a veggie restaurant for a Sunday lunch a year or so ago and I was thinking wtf am I in for here? The first thing I noticed was that the place was alcohol free, having become accustomed to the legendary Friday brunches in Dubai that was quite a shock...

    Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi's are wonderful, I have one in front of me right now, wired to a GPS receiver, that's my NTP server. There's another one in the back room monitoring air pressure, humidity and temperature and I also have one in my workshop permanently connected to a breadboard for general 'effin...

Manchester's 20 ''Star Walk Of Fame'' Revealed

Are you perchance referring to 5/8's Whitworth? How about A.V. Roe, James Joule, Karl Marx...? The Duke of Bridgewater? Oh, and my uncle Albert, he had a place named after him on Peter Street, I remember it well, 'Albert Hall'

    TV Series

Whatever happened to Fortitude? Wikipedia used to say that it was renewed for a second season in April 2015 and scheduled for airing late 2016, now it just says it was renewed for a second season, no air dates.

    Anyone worked in Oman?

It used to take me around four hours or so to drive from Dubai to Muscat, the speed cameras on the Omani side of the highway were very strict, that was around six years ago now. It is a nice place and yes there isn't much in the way of nightlife outside of the hotels. Muscat is quite a laid back...

    Phone Thread

I saw someone using a phone to project a movie onto a wall around a month ago in China, my wife got the details but said that the phone is only available on Taobao at the moment (Chinese equivalent of eBay). I haven't seen a phone that could wipe my arse yet though....

Shijiazhuang, China. I've got a chap from China Telecom trying to sort out my fibre connection right now, the 100M connection had dropped to 10M this morning :( I'll be watching QQsport, local free live streaming that works fine apart from the commentary being in Chinese, but from what I see...

    Laptops

I'm not sure what the problem you are having is mate, I can open, read and write to NTFS formatted drives from my Macs and my Linux machines. There was a problem around ten years or so ago where Linux could read NTFS but not write to it, that has been resolved. P.S. I use ext4 wherever I can...

read / write to RAM is always faster than read / write to storage Anyway, in answer to the OP, If it looks good, does what your son wants, and you can afford it, buy it. P.S. If your son wants any help with his computer science studies, forget the Nerdy blogs, ask the question on Bluemoon :)

    Laptops

"The PC manufacturers con people with RAM because they bump prices up and advertise it as though it is this massive thing when it is often the cheapest and most insignificant part. You can buy 16GB of laptop memory for something like £40 depending on the quality/speed..." Which is fine if the...

    Laptops

I wouldn't ignore RAM at all, that's what makes a machine 'fast', I suppose it's horses for courses and all that, for example, graphics capability is quite low on my desirability list. What I was attempting to say earlier is that a machine with expansion capabilities would be higher on my list...

The worst things about my Lenovo are the keyboard and the mouse buttons, however, I put that down to having had one screw left over when I reassembled the machine, I can't be arsed taking the bugger apart again ;)

    Laptops

I've seen machines advertised recently with 32 and even 64GB RAM, yes, they are expensive. I should have been a little more clear with what I was saying, 8GB is OK if the machine has expansion capabilities to 16GB or more, but if it's 8GB and no more then leave it alone.

i7, 16GB* RAM, 500GB SSD - see if you can find something within the budget. When he starts moaning about the BIOS then you'll know he has learnt something. *Anyone offering 8GB RAM is offloading old stock. btw I don't get the hate for Macs, they run BSD UNIX ffs! OK, they are expensive but...

I was thinking that, aircon in the UK? really? when I was there it was de-mister and remember to replace the wiper blades. 14 years in the Middle East and the only thing I had to worry about regarding the AC was to turn the fucker off when I needed a few more horse power!

    Trainee Smart Metering Technician

Smart Metering is an aspect of the Internet of Things, the meter can be read remotely by using the internet to connect to it. I'm guessing here, but I suspect that a Smart Metering Technician is a guy that goes around all day installing the things. I would also think that to do that job the...
