Free Talk - Wed 5 March 5.30-7pm Manchester Library

***UPDATE ON EVENT IN NEXT POST**** I’ve been writing a series of articles on the pioneering Manchester Corinthians. The latest talks of the day Bert Trautmann asked the pioneering women’s team to go to Germany https://www.mancity.com/news/womens/manchester-corinthians-bert-trautmann-63874464...

    Welcome Nico Gonzalez

Yes. That’s one of mine originally. I interviewed Harry in the 1990s and he was about 96. He had some wonderful stuff to say.

Bumped this as the meeting is Monday night. Free to attend. Cheers

Gary James Guest at Reddish Monday 27 January

Doing anything next Monday? If not then why not come along to Reddish where I’ll be talking about the Manchester Corinthians at Reddish Blues. Anyone who has been to a meeting where I’ve been guest will know that I’ll talk about City too (and that I can go on!). So why not come along? I’m sure...

    RIP Denis Law

I’ve seen a few obits for Denis Law say he retired in early August 1974 (or even earlier). He didn’t. He actually started the 1974-75 season playing (and scoring) in 1st team competitive games. For facts follow the link: https://gjfootballarchive.com/2025/01/18/denis-law-at-city/

    Manchester Corinthians: John Tueart film

If possible I’d like as many Blues as possible to share this film by John Tueart of the Manchester Corinthians. Their stories are remarkable. Give it a watch and see what you think: There’s background on it all here: https://www.imprintfilms.co.uk/oh-what-a-team Many of the women featured...

    RIP Denis Law

I’ve written a piece on Denis’s MCFC career including a few photos. Here: https://gjfootballarchive.com/2025/01/18/denis-law-at-city/ Another sad loss to football.

    RIP Denis Law

Not forgetting Bobby Kennedy either. Three significant MCFC deaths in a week or so. Awful times. Bobby was a member of City’s 1967-68 title squad for any Blues unfamiliar with his name.

    RIP Tony Book

The BBC have now made this a main story on their football page: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/ckgr0ely6geo Thanks to whoever it was at the BBC who made this happen. Thoroughly deserved.

    RIP Tony Book

I’ve just tweeted BBC Sport and Dan Roan to complain. They need to get their act together!

    RIP Tony Book

Sad news. Tony was a really nice guy. For younger fans who wonder who he was and why he’s important here’s a piece on him: https://gjfootballarchive.com/2025/01/14/tony-book/

    Citizens

As if by magic…. It goes back to 1894. Though it’s not a name us fans seem to have picked. https://gjfootballarchive.com/2024/04/01/manchester-city-nicknames/ Oh and that link includes the drawing @Citizen of Legoland mentioned. Cityzen spelling was possibly the preferred spelling in 1890s too.

    RIP Bobby Kennedy

It had previously appeared in my biography of Joe Mercer and before that was a well known tale that Joe used to tell on the after dinner circuit.

Bell Summerbee and Lee, with the 1970s team around

By such an awful coincidence Bobby died this weekend. Here’s an interview I did with him a few years back: https://gjfootballarchive.com/2025/01/12/remembering-bobby-kennedy/ He was proud to have played his part in that title success and it’s a real shame he and Stan Horne had to wait so long...

    RIP Bobby Kennedy

Sorry to hear the news about Bobby Kennedy. To remember him here’s an interview I did with him almost 20 years ago (follow the link for this free interview): https://gjfootballarchive.com/2025/01/12/remembering-bobby-kennedy/ The Bobby Kennedy shooting story…. Eric Alexander always laughed...

Bell Summerbee and Lee, with the 1970s team around

People often think we had an all English team when we won the League but Bobby Kennedy played that season and he was Scottish.

    A possible merger?

Mergers don’t tend to work in football. This was a definite possibility and meetings were held. It was Utd who turned City down though.
  18. G

    A possible merger?

First time I can recall but it’s one of those ‘what ifs’ that may have been discussed at other times. What made this different is that it’s a leading MCFC director who suggested it AND met with mufc officials too. Imagine if Ferran did that!
  19. G

    A possible merger?

About that time. This led to his interest and the establishment of his group.
  20. G

    A possible merger?

It seems incredulous today but during 1963-64 City directors (yes, that’s right!) suggested MCFC & MUFC should merge as Manchester isn’t ‘big enough’ for 2 major teams. Follow the link for the story: https://gjfootballarchive.com/2025/01/09/the-1960s-1964-1965-a-possible-merger/
