Grew up in Milnrow, LANCASHIRE (YEAH!) you are right, but have been going to games since the late 70s and NEVER heard the term until the fanzines came around (and i still read it a lot more than hear people say it). We were a lot simpler. Just called them United. Still do.

First came across the word in the mide 80s in the old Blueprint fanzine. Prior to that i had never heard it used before. Still never/very rarely hear anyone from the Rochdale area use the word. Maybe it is from a specific area of Manchester originally?
