My first thought is that it may be the laser that reads cd's in the drive (it does happen that they will read one not the other), however saying that an external drive does the same I would suggest having a look in device manager and seing if there is an exclamtion mark next to the cd/dvd drive...

I believe you can set the clock back on the DS to "fix" this. Only heresay so not sure if it will work. Got to be worth a try though.

If it comes with Windows 7 Starter you will not be able to change the background without third party software.
