A player that deserves the abuse Sterling got

The first few bad Sterling misses were brushed off but over time people let themselves get so wound up by it that they prefer a winger who almost never scores or assists to one who's very productive, but occasionally misses big chances.

Rule number one. Under no circumstances are we allowed to criticise Jack. Number two he will be great next season when he gets used to peps system

Looked off it tonight, his worst match in a while. Perhaps still coming back from that injury, perhaps the balance of him and Mahrez not working, perhaps some issues needing ironing out in his understanding with Cancelo and Gundogan, who both seemed to be taking up any space he might run into at various times .

I think he's one of the players that suffers most when the team is playing poorly - that first half there was so little movement all over the pitch, someone whose job is ball progression is stuck with the options of running into a space that has no passing option, or attempting passes to players who are heavily marked, or playing the safe ball recycling passes that everyone complains about so much. A bit more movement around him, his options open up and he looks much better.

If he lacks confidence, that's an opportunity for Pep to work his magic. He's a talented player who always wants to play and is working hard, and we've paid £100m for him. It's in everyone's interest to make him the best he can be. He also seems to be a player who's driven by his emotions, and that means the club has a job to do to get him in the right frame of mind. He's not our first player to be held back by stuff going on in their head, and he won't be the last. He and the club need to sort that out.

I still believe he has a part to play in our squad and will come good. I've been much encouraged by his recent performances. It didn't work out tonight. Sometimes it doesn't, all players have their off-days.

Sterling’s numbers at Chelsea are similar to Grealish’s at City.

Grealish is good if we’re taking the piss. Or we are winning and need to control the pace. That’s when he should be used.
