10 | Jack Grealish - 2024/25

This strikes as the current boom/ bust/ amazing/ terrible take that seems to have become the norm.

He was above average there today and showed enough to believe there is something there.

Think a lot on here wanted him tried there and it’s clouding there judgment.

Think his positioning at times was off, didn’t ever look a real goal threat and as such I don’t think he was brilliant or our long term answer at this point.

However and someone may prove me wrong he seemed to really do a good job of keeping possession, particularly carrying the ball forward.

He has not played that position in a long time and so I think he will have learnt a lot tonight.

Agree that he needs to start there against Palace, but think a lot of work needs to be done if he is ever going to become a regular starter there for us.

I hope for him he does it, very likeable guy by all accounts and has a lot of talent.
His control of the tempo created the space that KDB, Doku and Bernardo thrived off.

He wasn’t perfect, but our team structure was far more solid tonight than it has been in over a month.

He also was a double pivot with Gundogan and improved IG’s game too.

A work in progress, but tonight’s performance will have ignited a spark in Pep’s head and it seemed like the birth of a new system.

I’m shocked he was class there. Will only get better the more he plays in that position

Why a CM or an 8 should be judged by goal threat instead of carrying and keeping passing the ball?

The role of midfielder should be helping everyone else to be better not everyone else to create space for him to score.

We went down the wrong road last season focusing on goals so we played Alvarez in the middle. A good striker but never a midfielder. It made the defense exhausted.

I agree whilst some vulnerability remained, which is understandable given where we are, it did have more structure.

I felt it was more a box midfield especially in the first half with Gvardiol taking some positions very high up and Forest really struggled and it should have been rewarded with a goal.

I hope you are right, technical players all with various strengths. Pep is definitely the man you want to work it out.

He should have played there more often

Last season Gundo was gone and KDB injured but Pep was playing Alvarez there

Last time he played this position was in August 2021, away game against Spurs

Since then it was LW

I like this formation TBF

——————Ederson——————-
Akanji-Ruben——-Ake—-Guard
—————Gundo/Kova—————-
Bernie————Jack————Doku
—-KDB/Foden———Haaland—-

It’s given me some renewed hope at least!

Same as always on this thread.

Grealish puts in a good performance, people say "Well done Jack on a good performance", and like clockwork someone pops in asking why it wasn't a perfect performance instead.

I think it’s because people have gone overboard as they want him in that position and there was enough there to be positive but people want a bit more.

Whether he gets it more then others I don’t know, I feel there is a real support for him as player we really want him to do well, he comes across likeable and a bit of a lad (which we like, too many the same footballers).

I also think because his area of improvement is quite obvious (goal threat). He gets in the positions but never seems like he is going to score. I don’t know why!! Does he take longer getting his shots of or never positions it quite wide enough, as he seems to shoot into the legs of the nearest player.

Anyway I agree it’s a good performance
