Sorry bud, just not true. Look at his second leg performance against PSG for instance. Which was probably our biggest game last season (given the final took place after)
Fair enough but you’re talking as rare as rocking horse shit to see him burst through like that. If Foden’s playing on the left fine but if it’s anyone else they’re going to get far less support going forward than from Cancelo. As Grealish is struggling to beat anyone full stop I don’t see having a left footed left back who rarely gets forward changing much.

Don’t think Cancelo was particularly bad. Nowhere near his best going forwards but Zinky offers absolutely fuck all going forwards anyway. Unless Foden is on the left that’s a big problem as nobody else can ever go on the outside of a fullback
Was the worst player on the pitch bar laporte for me

how many times did he shoot from outside the box and the ball end up in row Z , or shoot outside the box straight at a defender who’s stood right in front of him

I can accept that a little bit

what was really frustrating was how many times he had the ball half way into there half and crossed a hopeless ball right to the keepers hands or out of play . Lost count how many times he wasted possession yesterday

I was probably being too lenient towards him but 2nd worse had to be KDB. Truly awful until he was eventually replaced

First shocker I've seen from him in a while. No big deal, he's got the mentality to be fine.

However he has just booted the door open for John.

He's still a very, very good CB in my eyes when all is said and done. Just a bit too error prone in this moment for him to be at his best (which is on him).
He is a top class CB with the ball at his feet when we dominate possession but when under pressure, since his knee injury, he is an accident waiting to happen.

He has zero recovery pace and is so flat footed, nearly every game this season he has been caught out, Saturday sadly he did not get away with it.

Strong bounce back performance.

Interesting thought he got caught out a few times myself, just feels like he is too far forward sometimes and the ball is played over him. But we are also masters of our own downfall and give the ball away in midfield as we are committing players forward, leaving the defence heavily exposed to a counter.

Solid response after a stinker. Needed that. Few times where he looked like he could be done and he came out on top everytime. Outpaced their striker when he tried to go round him out muscled him when he tried to go through him and read the game well when they tried to break down our left. With no sweet sweet carabao he will probably have to rely on champions league football now until something gets him back in, upto him not to throw a strop and be solid when he does get his way back in.

That's true he did seem too far over at times and a decent ball can pick us apart but he's basically forced into that. Grealish is rarely in a rush to get back and he goes one man too far forward when he presses with foden which leaves a big gap, cancelo naively then feels the need to push on and fill it when he should really cut the bad press short, hold his line and buy time for somebody else to come over, but then once cancelo has gone, laporte finds himself practically at left back out of neccsity and is the most exposed as our midfield doesn't drop back into the cb spot unless its Fernandinho in there who does that masterfully so then our right cb has to decide whether to leave a huge gap or go over too bringing walker with him and leaving somebody free at the back post if they can get that far.

If we had somebody LW who works harder defensively or we had zinchenko at left back who is usually more disciplined, laporte doesn't look suspect. I also think Dias keeps a tighter leash on cancelo when he plays there and isn't forced out of position as often.

Agreed. He quite often looks flat footed and tends to find himself in positions where he cannot recover without making the foul.

He's a very good centre half,but he isn't elite.

I said it in the match thread but he was poor today. Inspired no confidence in me anytime he had to defend 1v1. Got caught out of position a few times as well. If he wants a 'dream' move to a Spanish club, he'll have to start performing as Bernardo has.

If he could cut out hs brain fart tackles/bookings he would be a pefectly acceptable partner for Dias , the difference is Stones has cut out the mistakes and is now righlty first choice alongside Dias. Still a great option and streets ahead of Ake.

Problem is he seems to have at least one every game recently

Looks a bit shaky at present, Stones and Dias are without a doubt our best cb pairing imo.

First half he was very poor and against a decent striker he is far too easily beaten. Stones is a better cb and we look more solid when Dias and Stones play together.
