I very much doubt you can back your personal impression that Stones is much better than Dias and Laporte at passing the ball with facts and stats. There were stats from last season which showed he isn't better, let alone light years better. No need for wild and stupid exaggerations.
Stats, schmats

Stats, schmats

Personal impressions, schmersonal schmressions.

People thinking they are seeing the truth with their eyes are a bit naive, to put it mildly. All kinds of biases cloud personal impressions and judgments. E.g., Rodri was Plodri just several months ago.

It's a bit of both. In terms of raw pass completion, there really isn't much in it, as you say

I think the difference is that Stones attempts (and usually completes) more incisive passes than Dias. He's more attuned to playing passes between the lines or for players on the half-turn than Dias, which helps us in transition and makes our build-up play more fluid

Laporte is pretty good at this too, and is usually very reliable with longer passes than either Stones or Dias as well

This is when we can see why having four class CBs is so important if you're aiming for the very top. Eric has been excellent lately and last night as well. Some on here don't rate him saying he makes mistakes but show me any defender who doesn't. Like Bernie keeping him last summer was the best signing we could have made. I was really worried he would leave and I wouldn't have blamed him. He was visibly upset when Pep played f* Garcia ahead of him at a stage when Eric needed minutes to get in match shape ahead of the season finale.

Laporte's been our best CB so far. Stones hasn't played much at CB, and Dias hasn't hit the heights from last season. Think Laporte has it in him to contribute a crucial goal at some point this season. Remember, he won us the league cup last season.

Also scored a vital goal against Brighton on the last day of the season.

Yeah I think he gets a lot of unfair grief because people would rather Stones play than him. I understand why they'd prefer Stones but it's meant Laporte's many good showings have gone under the radar.

Let's not forget that before last season many a City fan would have argued that Laporte was the best CB in the league.

I do think we will be defensively weaker without Dias (calmness, aerial ability and leadership) but our distribution from the back will be better with Stones and Laporte, and in turn this should contribute to our attacking play a bit more.

Laporte is very important in terms of building up. His is able to pass under pressure. His pass found Grealish at the perfect moment and became the start of Grealish's run. A player underappreciated.

I think his passing is overrated. But that's just me. He has a decent crossfield ball. But other than that his passing is loose or telegraphed.

How is his passing loose, given his pass completion rate is the best in Europe this season?
He takes fewer risks. That's why. The few times he does, it's clear he is not as accurate.

Let's not forget, Mangala consistently had some of the highest pass completion rates when he played at City too.

Laporte, generally takes far fewer risks than either Diaz or Stones. This has it's plus and minuses.

On the plus we keep possession consistently. On the minus, we create fewer chances for he attempts and completes fewer line breaking passes.

He used to do far more of this a few years back. Now he is more basic with his possession.

So, his passing is not loose?

There are stats about the average length and depth of the passes, and they don't confirm your impressions. I remember such stats were posted 2-3 months ago in one of the post-match threads, Laporte and Dias didn't fare worse than Stones, if anything, their stats were better.

There's a reason why Laporte is Pep's first choice CB this season. Try ro understand why that may be.

It is when it matters. I.e. in penetration.

Stones has barely played this season at CB. Any comparison is going to be flawed.

He has a left peg?

Laporte definitely plays a lot of high risk penetrative passes, particularly from higher up when we're pinning a team back. Stones I think is better at cutting through the lines from deeper but Laporte is definitely amazing at passing too.
I won't use that word to describe his passing. But, I guess I'm perhaps being too critical. He was fantastic his last game against Sporting. So probably not the right time to be critical.

But I sense I see something. It will play itself out I suppose.
