I was very impressed with Nico yesterday.

He was a calming presence in our midfield, and provided great support for John and Abdu. It also allowed Gündog to play his more natural rôle, proven by the wonderful pass to Omar for his second

My mate said he reminded him of Gareth Barry and that’s not a bad shout. Very impressive debut.

What a game from our panic buy. Was really impressed, hopefully he starts on wednesday.
I really don’t understand why, when it has been glaringly obvious that we’ve needed a pivot since Rodri was injured against cheating Arsenal, we had to wait until the last day of the transfer window to sign Nico.

Why didn’t we bring him in right at the start of the window?

Don’t think we really know, but I’m convinced uncertainty over Peps future, played into it as well as uncertainty over the charges however slight that was. Now Peps signed, we know who our DOF will be, and probably more confidence in the charges as well as positive outcomes of the other cases has given us confidence to rebuild. All guesses though.
yeah i know pep said it was his decision not to sign players, but i also remember every single source claimed he really wanted bruno g.

a summer signing like nico or bruno was essential imho.

i agree.

the gossip was they were trying to reduce the price but ended up paying the rc amount only in installments instead of full amount.

He looked great yesterday, hopefully we can ride the next couple of weeks and go on to establish top four and maybe the FACup. Not confident about progressing in the Champions League, even if we beat Real we got ourselves into the worst possible draw towards the final

Impressive home debut, slotted in very well and looked like he had been playing at City for couple of years. Looks comfortable on the ball and I really like his passing between the lines. Early days, but encouraging signs.

I’ve said it before; Kevin's hamstring injury last season should have been a giant warning to Pep and Txiki, especially with the number of games that Rodri has played over the last three or four seasons.

Even he said he couldn’t continue to play as many times as he had been, and his position was the one that we had no genuine cover for. Yes, Gündog has done a great job as pivot, but it’s not his natural position.

It was a big mistake not bringing someone in.

An interchanging Rodri and Gonzalez is a mouthwatering prospect. Either can play 6 or 8 at any point.
The rebuild is on

These tweets are from 2021, does anyone know why it didn't work out for him at barca?

The boy looks like he has an incredible understanding of the game, not just the way he positions himself and uses and shows for the ball (over 100 passes yesterday with 95+% accuracy), but it was noticeable how vocal and influential he was throughout the game. This has suddenly become an incredibly exciting transfer I think.

From what I’ve read, Xavi didn’t think he was defensively good enough to be a 6 for him and he was stuck behind Pedri and Gavi as an 8.

He’s obviously developed more at Porto and developed the snide part of the game through Conceicao. (Rodri did similar under Simeone)

It was a superb debut yesterday. Your last sentence is spot on.

Yep, that’s exactly how I remember it. The plan was to establish a midfield trio consisting of Pedri as the creative No. 10, Gavi as the dynamic No. 8, and Nico as the deep-lying No. 6. While Pedri and Gavi were flourishing, showcasing their immense talent and making a real impact, Nico struggled to convince Xavi. He wasn’t solid enough, lacked consistency, and ultimately didn’t fit the manager’s vision for the midfield. As a result, he was pushed out, unable to cement his place in the team the way the other two did.

He played with so much fire in his belly at Porto, fueled by determination and a hunger to prove himself. Every match, every challenge, and every touch of the ball showed just how much he wanted to silence the doubts and prove his worth. The boy has a serious point to prove, and I have no doubt that he will rise to the occasion. Now, as he embarks on this new chapter as a Blue, I’m excited to see him bring that same relentless energy and passion to our team. This is his moment, and I’m glad he’ll be proving himself in our colors.

If you analyze transfers at Barca it looks like our academy prospects. Shining somewhere else.

Based on numerous analyses I watched on Youtube, I wasn't expecting much from Nico. All the pundits claimed that Nico wasn't good enough for Barca and that his release clause was way too high.

Yet, at least so far, Nico has been outstanding. He'd have been my MoTM against Newcastle save for Marmoush's hat trick.

Fantastic player - deftly passing the ball quickly forward - and finally we have someone able to play the 6 other than Rodri - reads the game very well, cuts off attacks before they become dangerous, and is a unit, not afraid to mix it up physically, delivering a crunching tackle when appropriate.

Fantastic signing.
