I caught sight of a quite amazing little moment in front of me last night. Villa were going long witha goalkick and their big centre forward moved out to the left wing to get up against Lewis and the keeper looked up to acknkoweldge this. Quick as a flash Rodri ran out to Lewis and told him to swap with him. Lewis shrugged as if to say "what are you going on about" but did it. The kick came to exactly that area and Rodri got up with their lad and won a thumping header, then they swapped back.

"Solve the problems yourself" Pep says in the new documentary. What an example.
He may end up deciding to do other things, as he has the intelligence to go in to many other fields once he hangs up his boots (hopefully not for another decade or so), but if he decides to go on the coaching track, he will make an excellent manager.

Got it all out of his system today hopefully. Possibly the worst 45 minutes since his first season in that first half. Not helped by leaving him completely alone in midfield but that's no excuse for some of the errors.

There's a need to protect him as much as possible from burn out, so why the hell is pep giving him more workload in these games? Needs a partner every game if he's to last the season.

Some bad mistakes today, probably due more to mental than physical fatigue. Still, he was largely excellent in the 2nd half, got another assist too. Can see Pep resting him against Luton, unless we win 5:0 at Madrid or something.

He gets caught on the ball in plenty of games but it is usually only once in a game, maybe twice, which given how much he is involved, is infrequent. However, it is something he can improve on.

While I agree, I think Palace played him quite well in that area of the field. Didn’t give him a second and put a body on him, making him have to rush. They also look to have kept their pitch dry and bobbly, which didn’t help his shift the ball from under his feet.

That said, he was a bit slow at times and played some hospital balls, not the least of which was the one back to Ortega that was almost an invitation to a Palace forward. Only Ortega’s quick feet and thinking avoided a calamity!

Second half, moved the ball much quicker and Akanji felt like a more secure outlet.

He continually shows how important he is to our success, even in the very, very infrequent event he is not playing particularly well.

The last 20 minutes of today’s game against Palace illustrates it perfectly. We struggled mightily when he went off. It wasn’t only done to him going off (that many changes will disrupt the flow of our play), but the absence of his midfield dominance, leadership, and forward incision definitely played a part.

Then again, any team is going to be affected by taking off the best player in the world.
