I fear the Shermans may take it this time...they've improved considerably since last time out and you could argue they outplayed us then.

How have they improved?

That's a fair stat, but it's always been the case that the Americans have had the higher ranked players.

I can't recall a Ryder Cup where EUR had 4 of the top 5 in the world rankings.

True, but regardless of us, the Yanks are better placed than 2 years ago, coupled with Tiger back to some sort of form and home advantage...it's a close call. We may still win as they are notoriously poor at team play, but I won't be financially backing us.

Can't wait though.

2010 at Celtic Manor, USA had 4 of the top 5 in the rankings - Woods, Mickelson, Stricker & Furyk.

The average world ranking of the US Ryder Cup players is just over 12, while for Europe it's nearer 19, while the US also have more players in the world's top 10 (five) than Europe (four).

Why it doesn't matter: There is no statistical correlation whatsoever between world ranking dominance and Ryder Cup victory: Sergio Garcia might be world number 19, but we'd bet good money that his record of 16 points in 24 Ryder Cup matches will be the more telling statistic. In addition, Europe's four players in the world top five also happen to be four of the world's top five: Rory McIlroy (number one), Luke Donald (three), Lee Westwood (four) and Justin Rose (five).

He repeated himself, I think, and ended up making a bit of a pig's dinner of it. He said the world top 5 twice. He should just have said "Four of the world's top five are in the European team".

Love it. Can't beat match play. As an amateur hacker it makes golf loads more fun when playing, but even the pros suffer when EVERY shot on EVERY hole can affect the match. Just ask Hunter Mahan what it feels like.
