1) Trump needs/needed Biden to perform awfully in at least one of these debates so the ‘sleepy Joe’ fallacy could be shown to the public.

2) Given the polling following the first debate and how it increased Biden’s lead by 2-4 points, Trump missing the second debate probably helps him at this stage.

His approach to the last one was 'I can be a big argumentative ****'. It went down badly. So badly the majority watching wanted to see his mic cut.

So where would he go from there? Trump needs these to go well for him, that only works if Biden does badly. Biden did fine last time. I don't think he has any good option. But not doing it works well for Joe. He will take Trump dropping out as a win.
