I think Jersey was the historic description used by the FA. Shorts used to be knickers or knickerbocks until the rule that they should 'cover the knee' was relaxed!

It’s a sop to the American owners. We get to keep all the trophies but everyone has to call their shirts jerseys and refer to it as soccer.
