2022 World Cup Discussion

Cant ever remember watching a World Cup where pretty much all the top teams look pretty average.

The French and Spain are probably the pick of the bunch so far but both of them are miles off some of the great teams of previous world cups.
I think that’s the nature of the tournament, only having a short period together prior to the start. More games will help them get there and the cream will always come to the top.

Not really been that impressed with any nation so far. Some nice football played by Spain, France, Portugal, Brazil and Croatia.

Mbappe could be the main difference in my opinion. Bloke is lethal.

Utd will most definitely be back when he signs........
Not been a single decent game yet. Spain v Germany was a good standard but not a classic.

I enjoyed watching Croatia give Canada a lesson. The Canadians were very athletic, all players seemed tall and quick.

They took an early lead but slowly but surely the Croatians took compete control as Canada seemed to lose any discipline from a shape perspective.

I watched it in Costa Rica and the commentary was really biased towards Canada. Plenty of pre match talk of Alphonso Davies possibly being the difference between the two nations and no speak of Croatia being one of the better European nations of the last 10 years that got to the final 4 years ago.

It was a wake up moment for them and I enjoyed it.

I’ve just seen Southgate interview where he was asked many questions about Foden.

Spineless **** is out of depth but it seems he now realises he doesn’t only play on the wing.

All of his answers about tactics are answered with emotional adjectives rather than football descriptions. Very different to Pep. I read he got his first job without coaching qualifications, I’m not sure if he has got them yet.

The Matt Hancock of football.

Play an important part?
ie from the bench

Southgate saying that there is too much pressure on Foden because he's a young player. This is the same guy who sent a 19 year old into a penalty shoot out in a cup final. There isn't pressure on Foden, there's pressure on Southgate.

He's basically complaining that people have dared to criticise him.

Have only caught a few mins of a handful of games and can't seem to muster any enthusiasm for it. The whole thing just feels off.

Made myself sad thinking I'll have to wait 4 years for a 'proper' world cup. Then made myself sadder by thinking that FIFA will doubtless come up with some sort of 'innovation' to go with the 48 teams for the next one too and that I might not see another 'proper' world cup again.

Doubtless it will be said that people are just naturally averse to change but sometimes that cliche is merely the last refuge of people who introduce crappy change that is only in their interest and who then get the arse when people don't like their crappy change.

What was it Mr Lyndon said...

Our players aren’t having that good a tournament
De Bruyne very poor
Silva looks tired
Foden can’t get on
Gundogan subtituted twice but scored a penalty
Ederson can’t get on
Cancelo and Dias were poor against Ghana, better tonight

So much for no one being able to compete with this star studded squad

Now compare this to Uniteds players, this the United squad who aren’t good enough to mount a challenge
Fernandes been excellent, Casemeiro too, even Maguire and Shaw have been among Englands best performers, Rashford scored

Maybe as some of us have always said, Pep Guardiola is the difference maker, not the squad or the finances that our owners have.
Perhaps someone in the media will point this out sometime
You could say the pace and intensity of the P.L catches them out. Cashemiro won't be able to deal with it imo and Penandes struggles with it too.
This tournament is a cakewalk in comparison

And the same Southgate that’s started Bellingham in the first 2 matches

I often think when you see our current/recent squad with their national teams that you can see them have to do a quick double take when they want to play a particular ball and they realise they can't because there is not going to be someone there. Similarly with making runs or a player moving into a particular space and even how the press works. Occasionally you see a bit of visible frustration when what they think should be on for them isn't. The possible exception is Jack who at the moment is played in a different way with England and probably knows he can get away with more with Waistcoat!

Well it seems that Kev has fallen out with a couple of Belgium teammates and it's no surprise that Hazard is one of them. If you watch any match of Belgiums, Hazard never passes to Kev, there is definitely bad blood there. The body language of Kev and the whole Belgium team has been shocking so far, and hopefully they don't go much further so he has a couple of weeks with us before it starts again

With England I see this often with Stones and Walker. Rice just does not make himself available for them in the way the Rodri does. I would love one of our squad to come back with a winners medal having played a significant part for their team (sorry Ederson) but the sooner the likes of KdB and Silva are back the happier I will be.

Well there's one thing for certain. I've definitely not watched the tournament and thought that so many great teams qualified that we really need to open it up to more teams who weren't good enough.

Madrid was the wrong move for him, has had injury too. But like most people when you get to a certain comfort level, you stop pushing yourself.

How he's the captain is anyone's guess, doesn't surprise me he's a plonker.

Kev always looks pissed off playing for Belgium, not surprised if you've got fraud Martinez playing you each and every minute. Such a wasted opportunity these last few years for Belgium but just themselves to blame.
