He is pretty good at the hybrid role in my opinion. I think he was just a bit rusty which was not unexpected.

Everton packed the midfield for the press, with Harrison trying to nullify Rodri. In that scenario, it makes it very difficult for the “step in” midfielder, because he struggles for an outlet in an already congested space, even though we all know pep wants the outlet to be either out wide or back to the keeper for the long ball into the open man.

Akanji is new to the role and today was not his day. Indeed, Rodri wasn’t having a great day, either, until things opened up with Walker spreading their midfield and Stones (a better ball player) slid inside as the RCB.

He was at his best on the right or left off the back 3 last season with Stones Hybrid.
