NO goalie is staying on their line on their first goal. Completely left out to dry over both legs.
When you read people criticising his positioning for the first goal, you just know they don’t know the first thing about goalkeeping.

He hardly had time to do anything as he was expecting Dias to head it and he can’t teleport.

Least of our troubles for this season and his inconsistent form is partly down to the constant chopping and changing throughout the season. I have no problem if he wants to stick around for next season but a new keeper should be one of our priorities in the summer.

It's not an either or. It's not come out to where he did, or stay on his line.

The thing is, there have been games where he would have been more positive, made Dias get out the way and headed it clear. That maybe wasn't on here, so he was a couple of yards further forward than need be. Might still have got lobbed, but maybe Mbappe wouldn't have gone for the lob either, hard to know. This one was more on Dias, but he's not been great a few games this season, especially the first leg.

He was terrible for coming off his line, then he seemingly got it coached out of him but its now come back and its not looking good.

He left himself out to dry. Plenty of goalkeepers would have stayed closer to goal. The ball was bouncing & probably the fastest player in the world was running after it, it was madness.
No goalkeeper playing for Manchester city would be in any other position. Ortega is in the exact same position when he plays, he's even been robbed and rounded in the exact manner. That's not coincidental, it's how we play.

I don't know how this can be your view on that goal. Dias was in the perfect position to make a play on that ball over the top and let the slightest of pushes from Mbappe send him to the earth on all fours.
Sorry, I did mistype there, meant to say more on Dias. (will edit original to avoid confusions)

No, it is exactly an either or situation, to be anywhere else is him being out of position or completely ignoring instructions.

he's in the exact position he should be in when that simple ball over the top is played, he is expected to be around the edge of his box to potentially sweep up which is where he was. He cannot be held accountable for school boy defending from Dias.

It's like Ederson mishitting the ball straight down the centre of the pitch from a goal kick to their striker stood on the edge of the box and then blaming the centre backs for not being able to tackle the striker who's just picked the ball up because they've split to the edge of the box for the goal kick as they should.

Disagree. Even two yards back could have seen a different outcome. Two yards back and any header from Dias would still have made it back, and maybe Mbappe would have for a different approach if Dias missed it.

There was a goalkeeping analyst around a few years back on Twitter, pretty sure he highlighted how Ederson wasn't great for this. Then he also highlighted a change of approach by Ederson which improved things for a while.

Pretty crap post without the evidence, I know.

Possible I'm wrong to attribute any blame for him here, but he often ends up in no-mans land due to his own poor decisions and I may be blaming him for those as much here.

And two yards further back and he isn't able to sweep up if that ball is slightly infront of Mbappe which is the primary aim and hes still getting dipped. We can't use the hindsight of knowing where the ball went to be suggesting a starting position. it's designed to maximise sweeping opportunities, it has flaws in the system that make it a risk and every keeper who plays the system gets caught out by it, Neuer at Bayern under pep and indeed after him was caught out just as often, Ortega has done the exact same things when he's played, it's a system consequence not a player issue.

Remarkably, i think i know what post you're on about, it was the leeds home game when we got beat by 10 men leeds wasn't it? I'm pretty sure he was just one of these internet personas declaring themselves as experts or analysts through overexplaining simple points and using a lot of jargon and data to back it up and hoping nobody questions it.

He was banging on about starting positions if i recall. I actually replied to that being posted here back then too to point out that the guy's entire analysis was based on the outdated idea of a keeper starting on or very close to his line, something ederson is under specific instructions not to do and even posted a highlights video that shown an alternate angle to the screenshots they were using proving that edersons starting position was never anywhere near where they suggested and therefore rendered all his "analysis" void. He was either a chancer or not a very good analyst.

Edit. Didn't see your last post. Seems to be the same guy as they're making a similar point, just using different examples.

He wasn't where he should be on this occasion no chance, he was absolutely nowhere near Mbappe the ball or the net. He wasn't around the edge of his box either he was near the penalty spot, he put himself in the worst position possible for that situation. The only way he could have been positioned worse is if he was stood near the corner flag, it was horrendous goalkeeping.

There is absolutely no defending the position he took up.
