This is what alarms me the most. It is normal to see new players taking time to fit into a team. But Phillips seems to have a lack of awareness of what is happening around him. He seems to have no idea what positions to to run into to receive the ball. This basic element is usually instinctive for professional footballers, even those with poor technical skills in the lower league.
or scared of losing posession

There has been quite a bit of hatred directed towards him and truthfully I think its strange.

It's been a disappointing transfer so far and I'm sure hed be the first to admit that. Bur attacking him for smiling is just weird.

As long as he's wearing a blue shirt I'm behind him. And this weekend might be his best chance

Its not weird at all because you are missing the point entirely.

Its all a part of his demeanour, his far too casual approach.....the lad needs a fucking rocket up his arse!
He needs more focus and intensity, more passion and desire......he should be looking like a lion about to make a kill, not stood there,or trotting about without seemingly a care in the world, while grinning like a fucking cheshire cat.

He seems a lovely lad,he's just far too laid back considering the situation he finds himself in.

I think Phillips will be better next season. Frankly, I don't think he has been bad. Has just been starved of opportunities.

Pep and the coaching team see him play almost every day so they’ll have a better idea of why he isn’t getting opportunities. I’m sure they if he shows more then he won’t be ‘starved’ of them.

I think some are over critical. Kalvin for me has been unfortunate in the timing of his injury and recovery then the issues regarding after the world cup.

I do think many judge a little too early.

Hes having to learn the most difficult role in a pep team. Rodri was judged and dismissed by many for not being dinho too. Hes also had to learn one formation and now a second formation.

Also i may be different here. But i dont think lavia is coming back. Hes not coming back to sit on the bench. Yes hes had some good games for southampton but its southampton and some southampton games hes been not great but those performances wont be as highlighted because of southamptons position.

Kalvin reminds me of akes first season which was disrupted by injuries and crap performaces (mainly because of mendy being the lb) but we didnt trust him and look how that has turned out.

Maybe just Maybe many could learn from the past and give this guy the time. Hell come good. Im aware its frustrating that we cant rely on him just yet given how tired rodri is.

Let’s hope so. If recent experience teaches us anything it is that some players take a season to fully integrate into Pep’s team. Fingers crossed for him he seems a decent kid

I do get that, I just generally don't like judging players on their body language. It's so easy to misinterpret and that's how we we end up with 'player x is lazy/doesn't want to be here', etc.

Anyone that saw Phillips play for Leeds and England for that matter will know he isn’t lazy. What I have wondered since the other week when Pep talking about Rodri said Rodri had to learn to stay still, not chase about and to stay in position. I wonder if Pep is trying to teach Phillips the same and at the moment he’s caught between knowing when to hold his position and when to move.
Maybe he’ll not find that balance but I’m sure he’ll be given another season before we give up on him.
