And while we are waiting for a player that has shown nothing to suggest he is capable, what happens if Rodri gets injured?
Were fucked.

Unless Pep has discovered someone else can improvise there for a league game or two to rest him.

Wouldn't be surprised if our scouts have identified someone else just in case Rodwell MK2 isn't good enough.

Then how can we possibly give Philips another season?

I know it could happen again if we buy someone else, but i think we have to try.The alternative is bring Doyle into the fold.

Think pre-season is make or break for Kalvin. If he gets a good run and proves himself in the 3/4 games we'll play, wherever we're going - America, China? - he'll make it to next season and be given another chance. But if Pep doesn't like what he sees, expect us to send him to West Ham in a hurry for £30m and rush Lavia back up north.

Although, it's worth mentioning that Nathan Ake only managed 993 minutes across 13 apps in his first season. So far this season Kalvin Phillips has managed 405 minutes across 17 apps - which is obviously only half as much but if Kalvin can eventually become half the player Nathan has for City then that'll be just fine for his role in the squad.

Gundogan is fine for most games, and stood in for him at Leeds and Sheffield United.

The problem is that Pep seems to want them both in big Champions League games.

As Rodri had the more recent break, I wonder if he'll play Everton and Madrid, and Gundo will do Madrid and Chelsea.

you look at the central midfield options madrid have and then ours. we need more reliable back up in there. It seems like its Rodri or nothing just now
I will be livid if Rodri gets injured or loses form now.

How and why we bought Phillips, who was injured when he got here, and then sold Lavia looks stranger by the day, I really don't understand the logic behind it.

Phillips should be starting on Sunday. It's a game of football against a team fighting relegation, he should be able to handle that, i thought he was bought to play in exactly these type of games?

If he doesn't play, then i don't get the point of him being here and we should get rid in the summer and hope we can get Lavia to come back.

Agree about pre-season.

Another point with Ake is that he played twice the minutes despite missing twice as many games due to injury, and arguably not being needed as much as a replacement for Rodri is.

The only other player I can think of who is good in that position is Gundogan, and he's not getting any younger and could be on his way in the summer.

Other than that, at a pinch maybe Stones could do it?

Or - and I'm only half joking here - stick Ortega in nets and play Ederson at defensive midfield. That would be peak Guardiola tactics.
