I'd love (for Kalvin's sake) if they played him as a CB - ideally in a back 5.

IMO a promoted team should play ultra defensive for the first season. Leave a few quick players up front to latch onto long balls and everyone else protects the goal. If they survive then they have a great foundation to build on. If they fail at least they didn't spend a fortune on the more expensive attacking players. Obviously 1 win is worth 3 draws but 3 draws is consistency and after a while some of those draws could be wins. Just my opinion but if a team was to be ultra defensive then having a player like Phillips in defense is actually more attack minded than having a player like Phillips in midfield where he'll be overrun more often than not.

Surprised at this unless McKenna is thinking of using him in a different way as they are a passing team and as Pep has said he’s not comfortable in that type of role unless he can see the whole pitch in front of him.

Maybe McKenna is seeing him as a sweeper that pushes up in a 5-3-2. That could be something that could suit him and utilise his long ball passing.

Hope it works out for him either way but thought Everton would have been a better fit.

Watched the game and he was perfectly adequate. He did a rasping shot from outside the box that the keeper did well to save. I'd say good Championship or lower PL standard. Certainly more comfortable and confident than he was for us. A good move for him.

Yeah. Being a hard worker in a midfield of other hard workers is key for him IMO - he's not got the confidence (or ability?) to be the sole holding midfielder in a team like ours.

Ipswich was a great move for him.

With his lack of athleticism he only will thrive in a team who play in a lower block. The game is very much simplified for him at Ipswich. Just break play up and spray passes to the wingers.

Wish the best for him but he never was or will be city quality
