Is anyone complaining that KDB did not play it square to Haaland either, when he took his shot, saved by Pope's legs? I thought there were similarities, other than the fact that it was incredible that Haaland had made it into th box, having ridden two fouls already to play the through ball to Kev.

Dunno have a look on the Kdb thread

I am convinced palmer will play midfield for pep before foden does, palmer has incredible poise and control to his game, foden plays in a single gear. the only time I will use foden in midfield is if KDB is unavailable and he can play as a AM and not as a CM.

The issue with that is you run the risk of Foden stagnating as a player. He needs to play central sooner or later - his performances as a winger seem to be plateauing.

Well, then he needs to improve and up his game then. Foden may want to play in the middle as he's stated many times previously but as long as he is stuck in that single, high-tempo gear that he's always in, hell will freeze over before he gets a sniff of midfield.

I don’t think Pep is going to play him centrally as some kind of present or gift to him. He’ll play there if he shows signs he’s picking up what Pep and his coaches are telling him he needs to do. So until Foden is played there, we have to assume that there are still things he isn’t doing that they want him to do. Pep has always mentioned that he only has one speed, that he needs to slow down. Even after Newcastle, Pep said that with both Phil and Haaland wanting to go forward, we didn’t make enough passes in the final third and were therefore unable to deal with counters as we were not in the right positions as a team to stop them due to us wanting to get forward too quickly. So it seems Phil still isn’t doing enough of what Grealish and Mahrez both offer the team. He needs to learn that side of his role to then be able to apply it centrally where it’s even more important.

This is a hollow statement.
Its true Pep has said this so many times in previous press conferences. He wants him to learn to slow down and then speed up and then slow down. Vary his tempo which he for some reason cannot seem to grasp. "Pausa" which David Silva used to have and other world-class midfielders have is what Pep wants from Foden and so far he's not showing that. KDB is already a high-risk chance taker in midfield, you don't want another one in Foden that's why he plays Gundogan or Bernardo there.

Yes, yes, we've all read about the mystical concept of La Pausa™

I just don't really think some of you know when you're watching it or how it applies in reality and I'm pretty sure you'll hold onto Pep's previous quotes until the day he comes out and tells you Foden's learned how to control the rhythm of a game.

It's just become a bit of a cliché to say "Foden plays in one gear" because anyone who actually pays attention to what he does on the pitch can see that it's not the case.

In fact, reading some of the comments over the last few week's pages, I think it's pretty apparent that many fans don't think he's been playing enough in that one gear that you think he only knows how to play in.

Think he needs to be played in the #10 eventually.

Obviously his best plays and most game time have come from the LW, but he constantly wants to be the focus of our attack and given Kevin's age, hopefully he get's transitioned there over time.

We got some nice wide wingers in the EDS coming through who can take over.

If Foden had been showing what Pep requires of him to play CM then I'm pretty sure he would have been the first one to put him straight into midfield and be just as eager as the rest of us to see him play there as he knows he's such a special player. The fact that he hasn't played in the middle for a long time now and especially in a charity match such as this just shows how far away he is from having the trust of Pep to play there.

Even in the last two seasons in the cup matches Pep would at least play Foden in CM even if he wouldn't be playing there in PL/CL matches but now even Palmer who could be considered Mahrez' replacement/successor at RW is getting a game at CM ahead of Foden who is naturally a CM.

I have watched him and he plays in one gear. Especially in the heat of the moment when the attacks are being constructed and the ball is with him and play is moving fast in the box, he doesn't slow his stride and give the "pause" amidst the chaos around him he just continues his movements in that one very intense tempo- again even Pep said this very phrase "His movements are all in one go". Personally, I have yet to see Phil produce what Pep requires of him.

Look at his younger contemporary Pedri, I love Foden but Pedri his poise and control and how he can shift gears effortlessly, he's already a master of Pausa at his young age, and why he's a fixture in midfield.

I hope this new contract doesn't make Phil get ahead of himself and focuses because as Pep said he can always improve and must strive to better himself every day.

Wasted as a winger. I also don’t know where this „ he won’t play in center until he does what Pep wants from him“ narrative is coming from. Palmer played in the middle too. If Foden doesn’t even get the change to play through the middle how is he going to show Pep that he can play through the center?

Foden is most effective whenever he comes through the middle. The only reason I can tell is that there’s Bernardo and KDB and the LW position is just the one position where he can get most of his game time.

He wont reach the next level imo until he switches to the middle where his actual strengths are.

because pep sees him in training everyday and hence unlike you he will know why not to play him in midfield

you don't know where this comes from? it comes form pep himself fyi. he repeats it almost in every press conference question regarding phil.

good clear explanation for those in this thread who don't seem capable of grasping this simple truth.

We know why he isn't playing there regularly because Pep values control but Foden's highest ceiling is the middle of the park. We've seen his performances against Brugge, Leeds, Andorra etc last season when he was unplayable from that position. He's being wasted out wide currently, there's only so far a natural midfielder can produce playing as a LW. He's got an unbelievable range of passing, very good in tight spaces and an eye of goal. He needs to play centrally soon or his progress will stagnate.

And he will be wasted playing centrally because he didn't have the required ability yet to play in there, time and time again Pep has shown us that he need that la pausa ability before he even considered to be played in midfield. The fact he didn't have this yet is concerning for his development but hopefully as soon as possible to further his progress and not been stagnated.
