47 | Phil Foden - 2023/24

Some of these comments are honestly baffling.

His assist for Grealish shows why he SHOULD play more centrally.

Yes he fucked up for the penalty, just like Dias did against Chelsea, both avoidable. Mistakes happen but it’s baffling how all the good things he did centrally today is all of a sudden forgotten and that sole mistake is now the reason why apparently Pep doesn’t like him centrally.

To focus on the action that caused the award of the penalty in isolation is not right.

The passage of play before that was an error by Silva. You could say the passage before that and failure to clear the ball into touch from the headed clearance was also an error.

Mistakes were made by multiple players in the build up to the awarding of the penalty. Penalty or goal there’s always mistakes that are made and things that could have been done differently.

The Team had plenty of opportunity before that phase and throughout the match to have won this match comfortably.

Maybe Pep and his coaching staff need to focus a little more on the collective shortcomings in matches this season and not an individual decision/moment in one.
Nothing wrong with the tactics in the first half where we should have been a couple of goals in front.

We all know he can do good things but his bad thing is he gets into a mode where it's pedal to the metal and full speed running with the ball or shooting passes at full strength that leads to losing possession and other teams countering.

It has happened multiple times this season "far from a sole mistake".. today is just the latest example! Did you forget Spurs and his heavy pass to Julian that Julian couldn't handle for the tying goal?

And way before the pen.. why is Foden losing the ball.. can't he do Pep's TWENTY THOUSAND MILLION PASSES to kill the game off like Gundo did? You don't need to rush things every time when just a simple cushioned pass to a teammate will do.

I love the guy but after 7 years of Pep saying he needs to learn to slow the game down.. he still keeps proving Pep's assessment right.

Maybe in the middle is just not for him where Pep wants a 8.5/10 every time!

Come on man, if we’re criticising him for the odd heavy pass now and again then football has gotten too overly critical.

Pep and this team have turned a one of a kind player into a robot.

KDB can go through a game under hitting and over hitting passes but then get one right with a piece of magic. That sort of patience/belief is not afforded to Phil.

He can create his own magic just like he did with his assist to Grealish, the difference is, if that comes off the defenders leg and we lose possession you and Pep will be criticising him for putting us under pressure.

He’s got 7 goals and 6 assists this season and he would have a lot more if he wasn’t so shit scared of losing possession.

We’ve got a CB at LB, our supposed best CB (Dias) is having a bad season by his standards, a RB who should be being phased out and not leading the team, a 5ft 7 RB/LB 19 year old in midfield. The team is so imbalanced yet it’s our most creative player who is getting the stick because Pep has brainwashed them into thinking possession is the be all and end all.

If you step back and just look at the make up of the team yesterday, both the personnel and the positions they were playing in, it’s clear we are miles below our very best. Injuries and mental fatigue and transfers that have not worked yet are killing our title challenge. We drew at home to one of the worst teams we have played this season who mounted two meaningful attacks all game and scored both times. I’ll bet they laughed all the way home.
Even with the eleven we fielded we surely have to be better than that.

He lacks discipline and that's why Pep doesn't yet trust him to play CM all the time.

No one is doubting his incredible talent but he does often give up on the tracking back and that is one aspect he really does have to work on to become that elite CM player.

Thought he played well overall actually. Had a hand in both our goals, some moment of magic out of nowhere is what Phil is very capable of. Unfortunately, he gave away a pen and that's what everyone will fixate on.

Pep does have a point as it was an indvidual error that cost us the win. The only issue with his statment it still should have stayed away from the media glare (although that is impossible to hide from it)
Side and backward passes when we should be going for the jugular and killing games off, costs us the win too. This happens quite a few times over a number of seasons now. Also, not making subs when players are quite clearly fading out of the game. I don’t often have a dig at any player or Pep however you can’t have sly go at a player in the full face of the media without looking in the mirror first.

We have enough players that slow the play down already. At this moment in time Pep should look at himself before berating his players. He should have shored the game up at 2-1, embarrassingly he felt bringing John Stones on with minutes to go was the answer. Baffling.
