I legit have 0 fears with him on the pitch, everyone was freaking out saying oh my god, dias on the bench. all I could think of was so what? Stones and laporte are there.

He will never get credit that he fully deserves because he plays for Manchester City.

Best english CB in modern era of playstyle, make anyone looks good even fridge looks decent because of him in national team.

I feel so much more confident every time he’s on the pitch. Our CBs are great and the way we set up means we hardly concede any chances but he’s, by far, the best on the ball out of what we’ve got. So much more fluid when recycling the ball with him in there.

Tuchel tried to repeat the play that worked in the final, to lure Stones away from the backline and to create a gap between CB's. Stones along with Walker dealt with it much better, with aggressiveness and decisiveness. The Chelsea match felt like a reassuring performance.

Your first paragraph is funny. You mean players like Aguero, Silva, Kompany and KDB who never got the credit for being brilliant players. Come on...they've been lauded all over the world.

Yeah, we were more disciplined, but we also played with a holding midfielder and limited them to a couple of chances and some opportunities.

Credit to John, he didn't really look rusty at all, it looked like he'd never been away!

We are blessed with three quality centre halves.

They will get ten time more credit if these player plays the like of the rags, dippers, Bayern, and two spanish giants. We are very fortunate that these player is still stuck with us.

I watched an article on John Stones today about how he started off as a youngster in Barnsley playing football. Eventually started talking about his move to City and his high and low moments within the club on the pitch. He was talking about how he had to get through a tough time when he was struggling on the pitch saying he had to prove to himself before providing it to anyone else that's he could get his game back and kick on frim his low point.

And he has, and then some. A really humble and likeable guy and we are fortunate he's found his focus and belief when so many doubted him.

I must admit I doubted him myself like lots of other blues that he could get his game back on track, i think Pep thought that too at one point.

I find it heartwarming when a player comes good again. Well done Stonesy lad.

One of my favourite City players from day1
Cultured ball playing centre back .with the confidence (arrogance?) To keep playing the game his way and pass the ball out from the back..with poise ,composure, and measure.

Everton fans turned vociferously on him at one time for being too laid back and screamed " get rid of it!!' as he looked for a pass....
Perhaps ..he was simply looking and waiting for Pep..and a manager who appreciated, and could develop the English version of Rudi Kroll,Der Kaiser, et all.

Believe it or not Blues..I still meet Folk who argue with me and say Harry Maguire is a better player than John Stones.( secret reds in disguise?)

When I remind them that it was Stones who guided Harry through their centre defensive partnership for England at the world cup a few years back ...I get the additional comments..Maguire is a better 'pure ' defender tho....

Looking at Dave Watson's performance for England v Scotland at Wembley in 1975 you could say that on a pure old fashioned traditional centre back ,No.5 role Maguire maybe..just may be is on a par ...but Stones is so much more than a stopper...in true Martin Peters style was "years ahead of his time." Playing for Everton in England. Now he is setting the bench mark for ball playing centre backs.

John Stones, the humble lad from Barnsley,a great player, and one right at the cutting edge of the revolution taking hold of English Football.

Manchester City,at the fore-front of the Revolution.

Both Dias & Laporte look better with Stones beside them
I think Stones is actually the best CB out of the 3, his game has developed to the point where he has no weaknesses, and everything is a world class strength.

Compared to other CBs (in Europes top 5 leagues) he ranks up in the elite of the elite (Across the last year)

Dominant Aerially: 99th percentile in aerial duels
Dominant Passer: 99th percentile in pass accuracy
---> And he makes passes forward often, 84th percentile in passes to final 3rd
Rarely dribbled past: 88th percentile
Dispossessed: 84th percentile
Carrying the ball forward: 99th percentile

There are many stats to look at but I think for a Pep defender I consider these to be some of the best in addition to the eye test of course.

In comparison while Dias and Laporte are doing really well, they fall short a little on some of these metrics relative to Stones.

Dias for example slightly beats Stones in passing metrics, but is currently in the 34th percentile in aerials duels (remember this is over a year) and 51st percentile in dribbled past and has been dispossessed more often, 66th percentile.

Laporte is the best passer in every way, is also rarely dribbled past and carries the ball well like Stones.
He is a little closer to Dias in terms of being dispossessed more often, and is very good at aerially duels (79th percentile), just not Stones good.

This is a little stats heavy, but it shows why I can see why maybe Pep might go with Stones and Laporte again. There are of course intangibles that stats can't show like Dias' captaincy ability, but right now, as good as he is, he has room to improve.

Pep full of praise for him after tonight’s match. Said the result would not have been possible without him and his vision. Mentioned it pitch side and in the press conference.

I do worry a little about him at right back, purely because it's been so long since he played there consistently.

But both recent performances in that position (albeit against Leeds and Brentford who troubled him little in terms of his defensive duties) were really, really good.

I love those forward runs with the ball.
