Great centre half, bloody awful full back.
For a club with our money & stature, we really do have problems with the full back positions

I do believe we need fullbacks. But we do currently have 4 fit ones, yes 3 of them are young but are they really going to be worse than the out of position cbs? I can say for certain that Lewis, Gomez and Wilson-Esbrand are miles ahead of Stones, Ake and Akanji at contributing going forward from those positions. The issue is more that Pep is clearly shoehorning the latter in at fullback to keep them happy. We have 2 too many senior Cbs. Should have 3 + an up and comer. Then we have Rodri, Walker or Phillips who could fill in if they had to.

Yesterday John Stones ran his heart out at times. You could see the frustration on his face, especially as he ran right through the midfield keeping the ball for half the pitch, passed it to one of the wingers who immediately gave it to a Brentford player!!
He then had an expression on his face that was so frustrated, so annoyed that he did stroll back. But I could hardly blame him.

That is not just my opinion, there were two or three guys around me, who don’t know that JB is my favourite player, saying the same things and we were all giving him cheers.
There was one throw in, in the second half, when he grabbed the ball and with the Brentford players still catching their breath, he had that ball back in play!!

Ok he wasn’t as good as he usually is but he was out of position, he wasn’t getting the support but he was playing for the team and the club. He might have had a small part of him thinking of the World Cup but he was playing for the club and the fans.
IMHO.
 
Did anyone else notice last night whenever he did well the comms were silent, but pointed out everything maguire did well.

I'm not in uk at the moment so dunno if Andy Townshend did uk comm. But stones stopped a clear one on one in the first half. He goes that's amazing by maguire, the other comm sheepishly correct him that it was stones. Townsend said fuck all after.

I thought maguire played well, but so did stones who's getting no credit.

Think it’s because everyone knows Stones is solid, whereas Maguire’s come under a lot of criticism at club level and to some there were questions over his selection.

Ye I get that and I agree, but to just ignore stone's during the game was abit odd. They definitely did aswel.
 
Stones is a fantastic centerback... He did all the work, the blocking the forward passing in the defence yesterday... but he didnt have any understanding from the other team players

Rarely gets the credit he deserves outside our fan base. Once again he has been our most consistent player this tournament yet you’d have to search quite hard to see it mentioned anywhere.
He’s top notch and we are lucky to have him.
 
Stones has been excellent in this tournament so far and is the best current English cb. I think in terms of England and to a lesser extent at City he seems to improve /make his partner play better.
 
Funny it’s all about Maguire ripping it up in the England side but watch if stones gets injured he will look average at best Stones is the glues in that back line!

Same applies to every defender in the world, when Mbappe is in the mood he is unplayable.

I have slaughtered Maguire and rightly so but to be fair he has come back very well in this tournament, his partnership with Johnny Stones is excellent.

Maguire certainly looks a different player when playing with John Stones, and I think he is usually shite when he plays in the rags team.
