Cancelo is a luxury player, he goes missing when the going gets tough. Defensively he is vulnerable and we desperately need a proper left back, somebody who can defend as well as offer something in the final third.

Every claim about Cancelo's weaknesses can be translated into numbers. Say, he can't do X and Y sufficiently well. Then we look at actual numbers about defensive actions and mistakes (duels, interceptions, tackles, errors leading to chances, etc.) and see that the opinions of many City fans about his weaknesses are inadequate. Compare his defensive stats to any LB in the league. Cancelo's are highly likely to be better. Compare his stats from last season to Robertson's. Cancelo's are much better, both defensively and offensively.

You won't find a LB in the world who can do everything Cancelo does, but is better in defence. Pep will have to help him find form again or the season will go south. For he is also our fittest defender. Unfortunately, Walker's and Ake's injury records haven't been the best, they are likely to get injured at some point. Plus, it's completely pointless to play with two defensive FBs in 90% of the games.

Horrible situation for anyone but not sure his form or lack of it is down to that incident.

It's down to the fact that he has played more minutes than any City player since the start of last season. Pep has overplayed him, mostly because all of Walker, Ake and Zinchenko have had fitness problems. Zinchenko has started only 9 league games for Arsenal. Neither he nor Ake have the best fitness record.

He had a decent rest in the summer and since has not looked the same player, as said earlier, he has had a lot of moves/clubs in his career, maybe we are seeing why.

Was the rest decent, though? Didn't he play with Portugal in June, less than a month before we resumed training?

Edit: Cancelo started for Portugal 3 games in June. He played over 60 games in 21/22.

When Cancelo is good he is very good, but as we all know when he is bad he stinks the place out. His form this season has not been good and currently I would rather Ake plays lb and either Lewis or Walker at rb, Ake whilst he is limited going forward is a lot better defensively than Joao imo. Cancelo's main strengths are his forward runs and his crossing with either foot and unfortunately even this side of his game this season has been lacking. I hope he can turn his form around but currently he doesn't warrant a place in the starting 11.

Here is a player that has previously had the odd mistake in him, a player that some have criticised for not offering as much defensively as offensively. However, he's also a player that has never suffered from a lack of confidence, has been lauded as one of the best attacking fullbacks in the league and has been one of our key players in winning important games.

All that aside, at the moment he looks to have completely imploded culminating in that performance against Southampton. The foul throw, the weird sliced banana kick towards the end, the inability to pass a 5 yard ball, the inability to pass a 20 yard ball. The inability to tackle or be in the correct position throughout the game.

Relatively speaking, I've never seen a player perform so bad in a game. I find it weird how he actually managed to stay on throughout.

Question is, what has caused this? Lack or playing time? Personal problems? Poor management?

Cancelo shouldn't play when he isn't on form, especially in big games. But we'll need him in form. Take our game vs Everton: an in-form Cancelo would be more useful than a defensive FB. And the same holds for 90% of our games. Ake's better in 1vs1 and closer to our box, he's been really useful this season. But he doesn't win the ball as often as Cancelo. He's less useful for our high-pressing game, and our defence is highly dependent on the efficiency of our high press. Plus, our build-up play is more stable and productive with an in-form Cancelo: the balance between attack and defence is better. Thus, even defensively wise, there are tradeoffs in using Cancelo and Ake.

Guess Ake will start vs United at LB. He will perform well. Plus, he's definitely more useful at set pieces than Cancelo.

Crazy when only a year ago he was being touted as one of the best full back in world football. Now he wouldn't be the best full back in the Preston sunday leagues.
