Rico is currently OK. Mostly tidy on the ball. Doesn't present a big scoring threat; passing isn't spectacular. On defense, gets bullied; mostly gets into position, but then fails, somehow, to stop crosses a lot of the time.

He's young, and may develop.

Right now, he's squad-player level.

A lot of this thread is really about either people over-egging Rico's custard and then saying that he is only 19 when his downsides are posted.

He's either a world beater now or he isn't? I agree with you he's a squad player. What puzzles me is that players like Rico have been playing structured football for 10/11 years at the clubs they are at, how long does this "has a lot to learn" take?

Lewis looked a lot better the other night with the game being more open and with broken play where he had more of the pitch in front of him picking the ball up with more forward options to pick out in space. Attacking at a quicker pace as a team makes players think less and act on instincts more, whether that’s releasing a quick pass to someone breaking forward and pushing into space with the ball yourself.

He’s not really got the game to unlock those packed defences really high up the pitch yet. You don’t get that opportunity to act on instincts against packed defences and it’s hard for even seasoned players to work out the space.

Got a hell of a lot to learn as a player but things will come in time.

i still don't get it. love rico to bits but what does he actually offer playing as basically a #10 in possession to warrant us being so exposed on the counter? It just seems like high risk, low reward. It's not his fault but I legitimately don't understand the underlying idea behind it.

Rico looked better in the first 5-6 games, now looks a bit pedestrian and offers little in attack.

Offered very little in the inverted role against limited opposition. I'm not seeing it currently and I'm baffled by this use of him.

Anonymous.

These sort of games don’t suit him at all. I’d rather play McAtee, he’s at least a proper midfielder and creator.

It‘s a strange role he is playing. He‘s not really ‚inverting‘ into the centre of midfield alongside Kovacic at all. Instead, he‘s shuttling in fairly long and straight lines from right back into the inside right position.
Obviously a great prospect, but fairly ineffectual today.

He was fine.

Im not really sure we found him in the pockets enough tbh, made it seem like he couldnt position himself.

Him and Savio need to work on their connection.

yep, while he covers kind of a huge area we arent really benefiting from it in attacks. he makes himself available close to box few times but Dias, Akanji and Kova usually aint technical enough to pick the right pass in those cases.

its like he is there but not really there. City DNA for sure:)

Typical city supporters Schrödinger's player, totally not good enough and undroppable in the same time.

I don’t see him becoming either great right back or proper midfielder.
As soon as the games get serious Kyle will take the place on the right because we need to defend very quick wingers.
The same was last year.
Rico is a decent player for his age and he will be very important player in our 23 man squad in the future. Not every player needs to be world class in the team.

Maybe time to take Rico out of the firing line for a short time. Happens with all young players, loss of form, confidence etc.
He’s looking very leggy and not the player he was when he burst on the scene. He’ll come good again, just needs a bit of a break I reckon.

Micah should be able to give him some advice about what it’s like to burst on the scene.
