87 | James McAtee - 2024/25

Bollocks.

Mansour, Khaldoun are more important for a start.

McAtee has shown nothing to suggest he is first team ready since his return from Sheff U.

He was superb as a youngster, gut not shown anything noteworthy as a senior pro yet.

If he hasn’t been a youth graduate, he’d be getting Nunes-esque pelters.
He hasn’t had a chance see also O’Reilly, Wright etc the only one who really has in the last couple of years is Lewis and he’s shite so it must be pretty frustrating for any young lad when we have no legs, they cannot do any worse than those who play week in week out.

What legs does McAtee have?

The less he plays, the better he becomes.

Well he can’t be any worse than our version of Tom Cleverley and Phil Jones ,championship level ‘utility’ player, the treatment of young player like the ticket prices and the ‘match day experience’ leave a sour taste.
He was rubbish against Watford. That was his big audition.

Likening him to Lewis is irrelevant as McAtee can’t play fullback. (Nor central midfield)

Neither can Lewis and we are not just talking about McAtee there are others who are just sidelined , totally predictable the same script every week. It’s been an utter shit show this season.

It has; it’s also highly unlikely that JM would have been the solution, he was bang average fot Sheff U in a shite team and would likely be bang average in our bang average team.

I have wanted McAtee to make it at City since forever but I guess he is just not showing it in training otherwise I think that he would have got more time.

Certain youngsters like Eric Garcia and Rico Lewis seem to have earned Pep's trust and so get to play whereas others don't even if, to us, they look like more accomplished footballers. I think Pep values what he perceives as "football intelligence" which he seems in very few players. Gundo, the Silva's, KdB, Rodri, Stones and Fernandinho (somewhat to Pep's initial surprise) have this and so get deployed in varying roles. Other players like Grealish, Mahrez and even Foden may not have this to the same extent and so get to play more limited roles.

Not sure whether can be learnt but McAtee and the other youngsters need to be up for whatever is asked of them to make progress and earn Pep's trust.
I mentioned the same thing on here many months ago.
No matter how talented a player is, Pep values football intelligence way above ordinary talent.
Mcateer is good but his football intelligence isn’t great.
The same people who criticise Pep for not playing Mcateer are also the same ones who criticise Pep for playing RICO Lewis.
Pursey is another player Pep rates highly because of his football intelligence.

Yet Pep dedicated minutes of his press conferences to talking about how he was so good in the small spaces and he specifically told Txiki to not sell him.

So which one is it?

Yet we are watching the likes of Gundogan be shit for several games in a row and there is no repercussions. Lewis cant play fullback either in the past two months.

For some reason this lad, OReilly and Wright are being held to some ridiculous standard to play in our current "midfield" if you can even call it that. Week after week we are seeing the same faces stink the midfield out and we have these lads sat on the bench, not even getting a token sub appearence.

Possibly but we will never know. Surely a bit of playing time for some of them couldn’t be any worse than the dross being served up and I’m sure it’s galvanise an increasingly frustrated fan base, it might not work but we’ll never know if they aren’t given a chance.

Pep always bigs up players. See Nathan Redmond for another example.

O’Reilly has played about 15 games in his career as a 6. He was a number 10 last season.

I’d maybe have tried Wright, but Pep knows better than I and though he gets some things wrong, he generally doesn’t.
