Academy Pathway to the First Team

It is a case of what is the academy for? it is seven years since Angelino came through and we still need a left back? we currently have four places up for grabs striker, has Pep played Delap enough, left wing why has the academy failed this glaring spot for two years, when they have brought in over twenty players?, defensive midfield Doyle could do this but is way too inexperienced, and left back same as the left wing, Foden has come through and is a first team player now, loved Palmer`s first game but got stuck out on the wing in the second and struggled, Garcia is ordinary and has been fast tracked.
All in all the academy is doing very well establishing a name as one of the best in the world, but is failing the first team, as we do not but for the gap between youth and the first team, the young left winger we have bought for January will see if City understands. Is he for the youth, loan to sell or first team back up.

The current U18 team is really the first team with the full benefit of the enhanced investment and there are some stars among them, in my view. McAtee, Mbete and Borges are three significant talents. Ahead of them, Palmer and Braaf who may well get some opportunity this year. The equal purpose is an income stream though and it is delivering.

I think the youth team based mainly on local lads seems to be geared to getting 1 or 2 to progress onto the senior team. Palmer, Delap,THB etc.

The players that we buy in (some quite young) are geared more to a revenue stream. The vast majority of these don't even have work permits and have to be lined out to teams immediately.
I am not sure if we are making any profit on them but some have come with high reputations.
Unal, Douglas Luiz, Marlos Moreno, Roberts. With the exception of Roberts I don't think the rest of them even touched a blade of grass at the Etihad.

The problem we have now isn't the Academy players as such, it's just that our first team squad is so good that many of the finest players in Europe wouldn't get into it. That's how high the bar is. Nowadays you can't be a "good prospect" to get near the first team, you have to be absolutely outstanding in your age group.

Pep also has the problem that he is expected to win the CL this year and he also wants to win the other competitions too. He probably doesn't feel there's much of an incentive to see if Braaf, Nmecha, THB etc are good enough. He can't risk losing games.

Phil Foden would be a starter in midfield for every team in the league but when you're up against KdB, Silva, Fernandinho, Bernardo Silva etc it's almost impossible to get in the side. You have to wait for an injury and take your chance. And the very best players - the ones with the right mentality - will take their chance.

Pep could say that he's given game time to Foden, Garcia, Angelino, Doyle, and Delap etc. However, I honestly think whilst we're expected to win the big trophies it will be almost impossible for players to come through the ranks unless they are world class at 18. They will have to be Messi/Ronaldo/Mbappe standard to have a chance.

With the FA Youth Cup now in the trophy cabinet. Maybe with all out injuries we might see more of the youth team players making the bench on the European nights. This is while they will still allow 5 subs per game.
