Accusation of Munich chants

All is i will say is this.Just imagine,God forbid,that the best City squad seen in years was wiped out in a crash this season,at say Dortmund.How would WE feel if Dortmund was sung at us at every ground and we were called Dortmunds?Think about it.

Will we milk it for all it's worth, gaining sympathy, support and money from all four corners of the earth? Will documentaries and films be made and shown on national TV every other year for at least 50 odd years after the event?

Munichs= Munich sympathisers,supporters who came from the length and breadth of the country and abroad to watch UTD after the disaster.This is the reason they are supported across the country now and by younger relatives of people who adopted UTD as their club. Apparently it was used as an endearing term in the early years after the disaster.

I don't agree with using the word but clearly there's a difference between a reference to the disaster i.e. the Who's that dying on the runway song, and simply calling rags, Munichs. Munichs as a term, putting aside the etymology for a second, is just a reference to the fans or players. Clearly the plural usage of the word indicates that. You'll even hear people who'll say he's alright for a Munich, when said rag isn't present. It's used for the most part in the same way most people use the term rags on here.

There are some people in this world who WANT to be offended. They are desperate for the slightest offence to come their way, even where there isn't any or none is intended. And when it happens the Rag media get out their bicycle pumps and inflate it to the most gigantic proportion.

We are better than that, and Sven's second derby win provides all the evidence needed.

I agree to some extent with Skashions view.
I was brought using the term and I went to school in Salford.
For me and many others similar to skashion, the word has been used in very much the same way the word ‘rags’ is now used. It has become a collective term over the years. Many moons ago I use to sing the runway song – I and many others who sung this no longer do (in the same way on the whole the russian submarine song, shankly songs, hilsborough songs have now largely disapeared). But I would be totally hypocritical to say that I don’t refer to united fans as ‘munichs’. In the same way they refer to city fans as ‘berties’. I know this post will be controversial for some, but i dont believe i am alone and believe there are many others similar.
Out of interst, I would like to know how many on here will own up to using the term ‘munich? I think it will actually be quite a lot!

Yep ! I will admit it and still do and probably always will, and likewise was raised in Salford, they hate us, in fact despise us and I hate and despise them. I may well be in the minority on here, but everyone I know and grew up with calls it them too. I think it was our generation, my son does not EVER call them this and he is 16. Let's face it a large section of my generation were like this. It is much better going to the game now and the trouble has all but vanished, which is great !

The problem with that bit of sophistry is that some City fans may see it that way but 99.99% of the rest of the population won't. They hear us use the word and they associate it with taking the piss out of the disaster and those that died. That's why we shouldn't use it.

I support your arguement 100%. I would hate to and do not intend to offend the dead oe their relatives or their memory. However when I refer to munichs I am using the collective noun for those associated with Manchester United Football Club (even though they dont see themselves as that). They (and the media) really do need to get over themselves.

You (and others like you) are the ones who need to get over themselves. When people refer to them as 'munichs' they are offending the dead, their relatives and their memories, whatever pathetic & twisted little excuses your addled brains come up with.

When will some City fans realise that our very own Frank Swift,( arguably with Bert and big Joe our greatest ever goalkeeper) died in that crash as well. In addition one of our finest ever players Matt Busby was very lucky not to perish..
