Rules on 3rd party transactions have changed since Leeds and Robbie Fowler FWIW.

Spurs pay us £5m, they pay Ade £4m and a wage within their limits.

Ade gets paid in full, we get a few million and his wages off the books. Spurs get a decent player for a decent price.

You are just looking at transfer fees - I would say over the period of a 4 year contract Adebayor will cost twice as much as Fletcher all in

The Daily Mail article is quite clear. Whether it's right is another matter. it supports what the BBC said ie. Adebayor to receive his City contract of £170k pw over the next two years. Not clear, according to the Daily Mail, City paid the difference between what Spurs are going to pay him up front or over the course of the next 2 years.

Adebayor should consider himself fortunate that City have the inclination to pay up the vast majority of the remaining £17.6m left on his contract.
Tottenham, with an upper ceiling on salaries of around £80,000 a week, were willing to pay the difference to secure the striker on a permanent deal.

I don't know whether the BBC or Daily Mail are right. The only point I am making is that this Daily Mail article supports the BBC's assertion that City have paid off, or are paying the difference between his City salary and his Spurs salary.
